Early pregnancy weight gain already overweight!

Hi all,

I’m looking for some advice! I’m currently 6 weeks pregnant (found out at 3 and a half weeks).

As soon as I found out I stopped smoking and as I’m overweight (BMI 31) changed my diet and cut out all the rubbish, I also started walking at least 2 miles each day I’m off work (and as a nurse in a busy ward when I’m at work I do around 10,000 steps a day!)

My problem is I weighed myself yesterday and I’ve gained 5lbs! Is this normal in early pregnancy or is something wrong?

I just don’t understand how I feel I’m doing everything right but gaining so much weight! It’s really got me disheartened!
Thanks

Hi @Kb92 and congratulations on your pregnancy!!

You might find that this early on it's just bloating and your body holding onto water etc. The chances of you putting on 5lbs of fat already is quite small. You sound like your doing all the right things in terms of exercising and eating right and well done on quitting smoking, all these things will make a big difference long term.

I'm just over 11 weeks pregnant and have out on about 6/7lbs already (was overweight with a BMI of 27 before getting pregnant). But again a lot of that is bloating as well as having a weird diet due to pregnancy aversions and morning sickness.

If you're really worried, have a chat to your midwife about it at your booking in appointment, but in the meantime carry on eating healthy and staying fit - sounds like your doing great for the bubba already 😊

Keep doing what you’re doing! It’s likely water weight but if you find you keep going up rather than down on the scales maybe track your calories? That’s the only thing that works for me. My fitness pal is great. Just to make sure you are accounting for everything you are eating and then if you do 10,000 steps a day each week that should equate to 1lb of fat loss per week.
But even the quitting smoking is fantastic and good for you for trying to make a change!! Stick at it; I’m sure you’ll start seeing the difference soon!!
