BLOOD TEST HELP!!

Hi ladies,

So I just had my 28 week bloods - slightly late due to holidays and app times etc so I'm actually 30.5 weeks now.

I got a text today to say...

Reception: Following your recent blood test please book a routine appointment with a gp. Thank you

I called immediately and asked reception if they could tell me anything and she said on the transfusion bloods all was normal but the full blood count results she can't say and she has the same note on the system that I need a telephone app with my doctor. Which I can't have until next Monday! So I don't want to spend an entire week freaking myself out! And we've really really wanted a home birth im so worried something might ruin it.

Has anyone had a similar text and what did it turn out to be?
Xx

Not related to pregnancy, but I have regular blood tests due to an ongoing condition and every so often I get a message like that. It's always that something is just slightly outside the normal range (or has been on an upward or downward trend for a few tests in a row), occasionally means they want to do another test but has never been anything serious. If it was something serious, they'd get you an appointment this week, not ask you to make a routine appointment. Also very unlikely to do it as a telephone appointment if it was something that you should worry about. So very unlikely to be something you need to freak out about - though understandable that you are, as I had the same reaction the first time it happened to me.

Thanks! I'm hoping so. I might just call in the morning and ask nicely to speak to someone the same day if possible as I have anxiety at the best of times that I have had for years! X

It’s routine so don’t worry, most likely you need iron tablets.

Fusioluxe · 22/01/2019 22:37

Yep, I got that when I needed iron and when my thyroid stated to play up. Both resolved by medication.

coffeekittens · 22/01/2019 22:39

It’ll most likely be that you’re slightly anemic and need iron tablets, if it was urgent then the doctor would call you straight away. I have lots of bloods done due to having an autoimmune disease and get messages like this all of the time.

YummyMummy2019 · 22/01/2019 22:48

Thank you, and probably a stupid question but I can't see the doctor to ask!

Will low iron be treated in the next 8 weeks or so before I'm due? They did my 28 week bloods at 30 weeks you see.

And should it affect my home birth? X

You'll be treated now. No it won't affect a home birth. You just need to take some iron tablets (which FYI will turn your poo black just so you're aware)

MiniMum97 · 22/01/2019 22:56

Yes I was going to say that, you are probably Anaemic if you are worried just go down to the GP and ask for a print out of your results. I can see all mine online so know exactly what is going on as soon as the results are in. They are your data so they cannot refuse (in case they try that one!).

genome · 22/01/2019 22:56

Its most likely iron levels. If you are severely anemic they may recommend a hospital birth, although it's your decision.
If it is your iron levels, try to take the tablets with vitamin c or orange juice to aid absorption. Also avoid caffeine around the time you take them.

YummyMummy2019 · 22/01/2019 23:14

Hopefully it is something as simple as iron.

Do any of you have any experience with Floradix? I can get this easily tomorrow or are the pills more effective?

Spatone worked better for me than Floradix

coffeekittens · 23/01/2019 08:39

Was just coming on to say spatone works really well.

YummyMummy2019 · 23/01/2019 09:07

Ah great I might try some of that just incase as I am feeling shattered!

If they were very worried they would not have waited for you to turn up for a routine appointment.

GabbyGal · 23/01/2019 09:17

If it was urgent the doctor would have called you. When my bloods pre-pregnancy showed my thyroid was way off the doctor rang me herself and told me what the bloods showed and that I needed to come in urgently to start medication. Bloods had to be checked every couple of weeks to begin with and I would get a text like you’ve received and would make an appointment and the GP would increase the meds slightly each time until we got it right. But because it wasn’t urgent like the original test result I just got a text. So I’m sure it’s probably just something like your iron levels as PPs have said x
