Non Rubella Immunity

Just found out I'm not immune to rubella, had the vaccination at school but for some reason my immunity has gone. I am nearly 17 weeks pregnant. Should I be worried about any risks to the baby or is rubella very rare nowadays?

Hi firststeps - I am also not immune to rubella despite having the vaccination at school and again 18 months ago I am still not immune. Rubella is still around, but is not as common as say chicken pox, which doesn't even get vaccinated against (I'm not immune to that either!) The advice given to me by doctors was to try and avoid children who have a temperature or feeling a bit like flu as this might be early stages of either rubella or chicken pox. Getting rubella in the first 20 weeks is especially dangerous, but after that the risks reduce drastically.

Virus germs are very easily carried through recirculating air conditioning systems, so I chose to avoid trains and planes in my first 20 weeks - in fact I lived in a bit of a bubble but that was for my own peace of mind I think! Hope that helps?
