I plan to. They put all sorts of finishing crap on new clothes to make them smoother and cleaner looking, including formaldehyde. Unless you buy organic clothes. And you don't know if somebody else has bought them and returned them to the shop before you.

halpert · 21/01/2019 11:23

I always have, I just imagine everything the clothes have come into contact with before I've bought them, and their skin is so sensitive.

TwittleBee · 21/01/2019 11:25

yeah, worth giving them a wash in sensitive washing stuff to ensure they are clean and suitable to your baby's skin

applesauce1 · 21/01/2019 11:28

I wish I hadn't washed everything... my son didn't get round to wearing all of his newborn outfits before growing out of them. Wish I hadn't washed them so I could have exchanged them.

Springmummy19 · 21/01/2019 11:30

i didn't even think about this until I saw it mentioned on fb. just need to make sure they don't shrink!

I’ve never washed anything before first wear, for myself or DD. Never had any adverse effects, and yes benefitted from exchanging or regifting if never worn!

welshweasel · 21/01/2019 11:31

I only wash second hand stuff. New stuff I dont bother as means you can exchange for higher sizes if needed!

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 21/01/2019 11:32

I'd wash a few bits but not the whole lot. As a pp said, you can't exchange for alternative sizes if baby is too big!

CrazyOldBagLady · 21/01/2019 11:32

I didn't wash anything, no ill effects.

TwittleBee · 21/01/2019 11:34

I suppose I do always wash everything for myself anyway.... I have horrendously sensitive skin!

That is a good point about new clothes being able to be exchanged or re-gifted. But DS did wear all his clothes (I was bloomin awful at squirting milk all over him with my let down... oops)

CemetaryGates · 21/01/2019 11:37

I washed everything and regretted it, as there was a lot that didn't get worn, that I could have either returned, or given as gifts at a later date.

I would only wash what you need in the first instance -vests and sleep suits, hats etc.

gentlyscented · 21/01/2019 11:40

I've never washed anything. 5 kids here and no problems m.

Abigwhale · 21/01/2019 11:44

I do now, although I have only had an issue once when my son wore some denim dungarees I hadn't washed and he came out in hives that lasted for about 2 weeks. Must have been a coating on the denim, but now I was everything before we wear it. He did have sensitive skin as a baby though so might not be an issue for many.

Angelmiracle · 21/01/2019 11:45

I just washed the 6 sleepsuits and bodysuits I took to hospital probably part of being in nesting mode! All gifts - new clothes bought after that weren't washed.

polkadotpixie · 21/01/2019 11:50

I didn't wash anything except muslins and towels and that was only so they'd absorb properly

Neither me or DH have sensitive skin so I didn't think it was necessary and DS has had no ill effects

Meant that I could return unworn things too 😊

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 21/01/2019 11:51

I washed a few things for the hospital bag, but not everything I’d bought just in case she was gigantic and stuff needed swapped. When we got home I quickly ran out of pre-washed stuff and just took the other onesies etc straight out of the packaging as I otherwise dd would have been naked.

Made no difference to DD, but then none of us have sensitive skin.

I brought exchanged a lot of pre-bought stuff/gifts for bigger sizes or more practical stuff so there would have been a lot of waste if I’d washed everything upfront.

OnwardsAndUpwards10 · 21/01/2019 12:02

I did, probably wouldn't bother with hassle now though.

QueenGoblin · 21/01/2019 12:14

I washed everything. I still wash everything before it's worn. DS is 16 months old now.

SlimGin · 21/01/2019 12:56

I didn't and still don't, no problems here.

BeeYouTiful · 21/01/2019 14:21

I didn't wash any of my DC clothes. I did however wash their blankets in time for the big arrival because I'm a sucker for fresh washing and I needed the familiar laundry smell with me in hospital!

Notquiteagandt · 21/01/2019 14:36

I have washed everything. Even taking the fabrics off the moses basket, carseat etc and washing them.

I am a buyer so been to many a garment factory. They are grim 🤢 also fabrics are coated in so much chemical crap to keep them fresh and repel rodents on the long journey on a container frieght to the uk.

I wouldnt say I am a particulary clean person either.

Muslins and blankets etc soften up woth washing anyways so its beneficial to wash them before use.
