Just that really, on holiday atm and have just eaten a sharing board of cured ham etc with my husband. He had the majority, but now I'm feeling awful as I didn't think it was an issue Sad i feel fine and I know the risk of food poising/toxoplasmosis is low, but feel terrible. Has anyone done anything similar? I need a bit of reassurance x

I found this

“There's only a very small chance that you'll get food poisoning from eating cold cured meats such as salami and chorizo. That's why the NHS says that it's safe to eat cold cured meats in pregnancy, as long as the pack says it's ready to eat.”

I’m sure you will be fine. There’s alwats risks but they really are minimal. Don’t worry.

The risk with ready-to-eat cured meats is very small. Please try not to worry! I've eaten a couple of sandwiches this pregnancy, which had salami in, because I just totally forgot of the risk. You won't be the first or last!

At home I freeze salami and palma ham, etc so can enjoy it without worrying.

The NHS advice went backwards and forwards on cured meats during my pregnancy. In the end it settled on the fence with saying the risk is tiny. I ate loads of cured meats.

I too worried about this...I did get tested for Toxo and it came back negative...and that I didn't have any anti bodies either...which means I have never had it....this reassured me because I have eaten cured meats my whole life...and obviously never got Toxo....So the risk of getting it by eating them a few times whilst pregnant is so low it's really not worth worrying about.

My little boy is here now and I really regret spending most of my pregnancy worrying about stuff like this...not that this helps at all whilst you are in the middle of a worry etc. Xx

I ate lots of cured meats in Barcelona when I was 11 weeks - I’d try not to worry. You would know if you’re poorly over next few days and you can get immediate attention.

Try not to worry!

Thank you all! I've been reading the Tommy's website and it says you can request a blood test from midwife/gp if you are worries you are at risk. My next appointment with the consultant is next Thursday so I will see what she thinks too. I have been eating them from supermarkets in England as they are frozen first but just didn't think while out here that may not be the case! I just hate the thought that something I could of prevented may harm the baby, I feel physically sick with worry.

It'll be fine. I ate loads of them throughout first and second pregnancies on holidays in Italy and Greece. No ill effects on either child. Unless that's why my now 4 year old is refusing to sleep tonight.... 🤔

Ooh, how does this work, do you just freeze and defrost? I usually use raw parma ham on my blue cheese pasta so tried cooking it but it wasn't anywhere near as nice.

minipie · 14/01/2019 21:56

Also interested in whether salami defrosts ok? (Not for pregnancy reasons but I’d love to stock up and freeze some for later)

Salami and palma ham feeeze absolutely fine (think of all the frozen pizzas in the shops with them as toppings)
