perineal massage

explained here

is supposedly helpful to avoid tearing or episiotomy

i didn;t do it myself

I think you are meant to start at least 6 weeks before your EDD, it cuts down the risk of teariung , Do use something non scented or it'll sting !! Neals yard do a lovely " mother's balm" which you can use down there or failing that olive oil - not for cooking but for skin !!

36 weeks with wheatgerm oil everytime i went to the loo. Worked for me twice. No cuts, tears etc.

Alfie72 · 29/06/2007 15:28

Nice one, I'm going to give it a whirl, anything to prevent any tearing

Sixer · 29/06/2007 15:29

worth a try.

LadyTophamHatt · 29/06/2007 15:30

apart from the fact that I couldn't have reached it, the thought of it makes me shudder.

ewwww

Lizzzombie · 29/06/2007 15:32

make sure you use the right type of oil.
if you have a nut allergy almond or walnut oil can cause a reaction in some cases....imagine!!
I used vitamin E oil from Holland & Barratt.
Still had to have an episiotomy (sp?) LO thought he'd come out with his hand on his head. Nice. Good luck!

dassie · 29/06/2007 15:38

I did it once or twice but I didn't tear because I listened to the midwide when pushing. She was a star!

dassie · 29/06/2007 15:39

midwife!

quokka · 29/06/2007 15:43

I did it every day from 31 weeks had 2 boys and no tearing at all. It takes a while to get used to it but I would deffo do it. I used almond oil, which I also used to rub on my belly and boobs to reduce stretch marks. It was a bit difficult when I was preggers the second time and my ds1 hovering around all the time, saying what you doing mummy !

quokka · 29/06/2007 15:47

if your worried about allergies then use grapeseed oil, you can get it at a healthfood shop I'm pretty sure

RGPargy · 29/06/2007 16:27
