Brown discharge after scan?

Hi all

I'm currently 7 weeks pregnant (based on LMP) with my 1st baby and panicking!

I had a private scan yesterday and everything was fine with heartbeat seen although dated slightly earlier at 6w1d. It was transvaginal due to how early I am. Straight after the scan I had a tiny amount of brown discharge that settled v quickly but then tonight it's started again. It's only on my knickers and when I wipe and its a small amount, looks like brown discharge you get right at end of period but less (sorry if TMI)! No bright red blood and no severe cramps although my lower back is sore.

Wondering whether it could be related to the scan or whether something I need to worry about... anything at all is freaking me out at the moment!

Thanks in advance

Hi OP

I’ve had this before and called the midwife I was a little later than you, but I was worried too. She wasn’t particularly concerned that it was brown and told me it was “old” if it was bright red or become heavy to contact them back. However, I wasn’t as early as you so for peace of mind I’d contact your maternity unit (if you have the details yet) if not, call your GP tomorrow if it’s still light. Explain that you’ve monitored it etc and are worried.

It’s always better to check & don’t think you’ll be wasting anyone’s time (I’m bugger for doing this but it’s true!)

I’m sure you’re okay but as I say always check if you’re worried x

In my experience of quite a few transvaginal scans, brown discharge is relatively common afterwards for a short while.

During the scan they basically poke around in parts of the uterus that would usually be left alone and old blood pooled there can become dislodged from the various creases and make its way out. I wouldn't worry too much, although I know that's easier said than done. If it gets heavier or redder I'd definitely ring the midwife or 111.

Unfortunately, if it is to be bad news, there's not much they can do to stop it. Still, better that you are supervised than not if it had to be that way. All that said, personally I wouldn't worry yet, on the symptoms you've described (albeit not a doctor, of course).

Thanks so much Anyat and Stargazy.

It seems to have stopped this morning so I'll just keep a close eye and call midwife/GP if it starts up again or gets heavier.

She did do a LOT of poking around with the scan so hopefully that's all it is!

Thanks again

Yup had this myself as well - I went in because of blood and came out worrying more but it's just the old blood and if the scan showed everything was okay and she has no cause for concern then you will be fine :)

I had a scan at 7.5 weeks because I was in a car crash but also had blood as you've described. Mine wasnt A TV scan thought. Like others have said, this is most likely old blood also it is very comment to have brown blood when you are 7-8 weeks pregnant which is implantation bleeding.

I wouldn't worry. X
