Concerned after Dr's referal

Hi, I have found a lump in my right upper abdomen, significantly sized and easily felt by others. I went to the doctors and he is going to refer me for a scan which is great of course but it's now playing on my mind. What if it is something and what if it does need removing? It's above my bump right now but shortly (if my previous bumps are anything to go by,) it'll be part of my bump. Doctor seemed calm and said he doubts its cancer and unlikely place to be connected to an organ but online it indicates it is the exact location a lump would be if it were liver cancer. I know I shouldn't have googled, I realise it's prob not this but still. Doctor thinks it'll be a benign mass and I'm hoping that too. He said to go back whilst waiting for scan if it gets bigger or starts to hurt, it's OK but I'm starting to feel slight discomfort in back behind it. Anyway, Im now wondering how long a scan appointment will take as he didn't seem to have much urgency over it, at one point suggesting I could get the sonographer to check it at my 20 week scan (he's the Dr at the practice that is most likely to send you away to monitor it and I've never had a prescription from him before.) He quickly thought again and realised that that person wouldn't be qualified to check it but still.
If it does need removing is that going to interfere with baby? I'm 14 Weeks now. I don't want to be a pain and hound the doctors but I've got loads of questions and feel really worried. Anyone had any experience with this sort of thing before? Xx

I'm a doctor and this confuses me. If you can feel it easily it's more likely just under the skin. The liver is protected under the ribs so I think it's unlikely to be from that -usually to feel an enlarged liver we do a test where you breathe in and out deeply and you have to push quite hard to feel it.
I would bet on a lipoma (benign fatty lump) if I could put money on it from that history!
Hope it settles your mind a bit. No one will know anything until the scan.

Thank you so much for your reply, it certainly makes me feel better to read that. He did get me to cough a few times and he did press the area a lot but you can feel it easily without pressing down. I'm hoping the scan will be soon. Would a lipoma need removing if in way of growing bump do you think?

No, because usually they grow outwards not inwards so wouldn't affect the bump. Anyone would be hesitant to remove something from a pregnant woman that wasn't entirely necessary anyway!

If it comes out with coughing is it a hernia rather than anything else?

Justus22 · 05/01/2019 23:30

No he said there was no change when I coughed.

Good. Do you have a scan date? Keep us updated.

Justus22 · 06/01/2019 09:54

Thank you, you've made me feel much better. I'm just waiting for the date so will let you know the outcome.

Hi @hiphopotomous, just updating, you were right it is a 3cm lipoma that needs removing as it'll continue to grow and cause discomfort but it can wait until baby is born and when I'm ready. I'm so relieved. Thanks for your messages x
