Consent in vaginal examinations

Hi,

I had a vaginal examination with a speculum this week, the doctor did ask for consent.
On reading my notes I have read I had a ‘high vaginal swab’ taken - I wasn’t aware of this as, where I find any intimate examination very difficult to do, I looked away.

I am very grateful that the doctor was able to confirm everything was ok with baby, I do feel I should have been told about this. I wouldn’t have refused if it’s necessary for our care but I feel a bit violated to have had something done I wasn’t aware of. I might be a bit sensitive as I have had previous abuse and really do find the more intimate side of pregnancy and birth difficult to cope with. The doctor had good beside manner and was very kind to me.

Am I being ridiculous?!

No, you should have been asked.
