Hi I am 33 weeks pregnant with my second child. I have never had cravings before but now in the last week or so I have really been craving solvent smells like petrol white spirits and certain polishes, obviously I know these are probably not safe so I have been stopping myself from for filling my cravings .... It's so hard please help me find a safe alternative smell to satisfy my solvent smell cravings!!!!!! HELP

You should speak to your midwife, these weird non-food cravings can be an indication of a dietary/mineral deficiency that needs addressing

So glad you posted this. Also in the same boat. I'm 32 weeks pregnant. Started off craving petrol/nail polish/marker pens. Now it's nail polish remover it's so bad I want to drink it. Think it's called pica a craving of a non food item. Alot of people think its down to lacking something but I don't think it is. Have mentioned it to midwife and all my levels and bloods have been perfect. I had it with my first, at work I had to resist pulling the marker pens from the cupboard for a quick sniff. And I went through bottles of anti bac handgel as again the smell I just craved so badly. Soon as I had my daughter it went and I was repulsed by the smell.

get someone to hide some mothballs around the house, they have a similar smell to solvents

Try sniffing rubber - (hot water bottle, rubber band) same effect but less toxic!

Get checked. I had this and was very low on folic acid. Made me quite ill eventually.

I had similar with my second pregnancy. I used to stand outside the swimming pool around the corner to smell the chlorine. They were also re-tarmacing the road near my house and I couldn't stop going outside and sniffing the air Grin. Very strange!

As others have said, please let your midwife know about this! Mine told me to report to her any “non food” cravings at all as they can indicate you are deficient in something...
