Hi everyone! Looking for some advice. I’ve been having acid reflux and have been taking peptic acid (Gaviscon) for months now. Also had this in previous pregnancy. I’m also taking iron tablets. Over the last few nights it’s been unbearable and waking up every half hour or so with burning in my throat. When I get to sleep I wake up with vomit in my mouth. Does anyone have any advice or tips? Trying not to eat late at night generally. Haven’t really eaten much tonight at all. Seeing midwife next week but looking at how to survive the next few days. Thanks in advance for any advice/ support x

I have been having the Same problem I find the love heart sweets helped alot for acid and when do you take your last iron tablet..

Sweetooth92 · 28/12/2018 21:52

Unfortunately sometimes you can’t do anything 🙄
I went through boxes of Rennie like a luncatic when I was pregnant. I think at points a box of 96 was lasting 2 days. I was often sick it was so rough. I tried to not let my stomach get too empty as found it was more aggressive then, & just had to deal with it. However it did instantly go once he arrived. Hope you find a solution and get things sorted! Propping up on pillows so I was half upright saved the taste in my mouth, if that’s comfortable for you

Omeprazole is the one! Preventative rather than reactive so will help hugely! X

I would go straight to GP and get prescribed Omeprazole or similar, not sure what the midwife can do to help. I’ve had horrendous heartburn... gaviscon doesn’t touch it for me but I take a double
Dosage of omeprazole which does help. Weirdly only food which helps is carrots.... lots of them cut up raw.... and chamomile tea sometimes helps. It doesn’t seem to matter when I eat as I have heartburn 7 hours after eating ☹️
Good luck - it’s so awful!!!!

WhiteWashGails · 28/12/2018 21:53

I’m having the same thing and as well as gaviscon I’m not eating a thing after 5pm and having 2 pillows so I’m not flat.

Worked a treat

Try over the counter ranitidine. The OTC dose is 75mg although much higher doses are perfectly safe. I would advise discussing with your midwife/GP before taking more of you need to. Omemprazole is also an options

RNBrie · 28/12/2018 21:59

Agree that the GP and omeprazole are the way to go. Cured my heartburn the same day and in never came back. It really upsets me that pregnant women just seem to have an expectation of debilitating heartburn and midwives/doctors don't tell them it's 100% fixable.

stoplickingthetelly · 28/12/2018 22:06

I was prescribed renitidine when I was pregnant. I suffered terribly with acid reflux and this really helped.

matchalatte · 28/12/2018 22:07

Lemon sherbet sweets or a spoon of coconut oil eased mine.

Podemos · 28/12/2018 23:02

Do you need to take the iron tablets? They wrecked my stomach and gave me the worst heart burn ever. A a few days after stopping them and I only have very very mild feelings of a bit of acid that I don't need to take anything for. If the iron has been recommended for your low levels then definitely see your gp about the heartburn

Kidneybean2016 · 29/12/2018 08:20

Thanks everyone for the advice. @Podemos Unfortunately in both pregnancies my iron drops quickly and remains low so I have to take iron supplements. In my last pregnancy I remained on them from just after bloods at 12 weeks until birth. I am being tested for third time this pregnancy on Wed so maybe I can come off them maybes - fingers crossed. @rach2713 I tend to take the tablets at different times depending on what I’m eating if I’m having milk or egg but over the last few days I’ve been trying to take at breakfast and lunch. Going to phone the GP on Monday and try some dairy free days this weekend. Last night wasn’t as bad as it has been recently. At least I got some sleep. Thanks so much for the advice everyone x

My midwife told me to take the last one at tea time as I was on 3 a day and would take my last before bed and was getting really bad acid but I have started taking at tea time and worked wonders for me..

Apple Cider Vinegar in water has helped mine

kmreeve · 01/01/2019 08:56

Gp for prescription- absolutely no need to suffer. One tablet a day = no heartburn

Stephisaur · 01/01/2019 11:07

I found that eating helped mine, so I wouldn’t deprive yourself in the evenings. Something salty usually helped to calm it down. Try not to eat your food too hot either, because that always set mine off.

I also found chocolate milk to be very helpful, but some people find that milk makes theirs worse so you’d have to see how you got on with that one.
