Having a sip of gin whilst pregnant?

Hi all.

I'm currently 29+3 with my first baby and have so far completely avoided alcohol. However, today I had a tiny sip of my partner's gin and tonic and didn't think much of it. However, my partner's mum seemed horrified that I was 'drinking a spirit' when pregnant. Now I'm a little worried Sad

It was the tiniest sip. I understand that alcohol is best avoided in pregnancy and so far that tiny sip of gin is the only alcohol I've had or plan to have. Have any other pregnant ladies indulged a little?

Oh OP. That's 100% ok and no harm will have been done to the baby. Your partner's mum was being unfair and unkind.

Have a good Christmas and do have another tiny sip when you feel like it.

CobaltRose96 · 25/12/2018 12:15

Thank you! It was lovely Grin I'm a naturally anxious person anyway and have previously had a miscarriage so her horror at my little indulgence didn't help.

Merry Christmas! Xmas Grin

I’m 16+3 with an ivf baby.

Last night I had half a small glass of red. I’m planning the same again today. My midwife tells me I could have a whole small glass and it would be fine.

You probably get more alcohol from your mouthwash each morning.

Have a small gin once MIL leaves (or you leave if at their place) and savour it.

Stephisaur · 25/12/2018 12:19

I had a sip of DH’s cocktail around 28 weeks.

Doesn’t seem to have done DS any harm :)

Hopefully it was nice :)

Darkstar4855 · 25/12/2018 12:26

I had the occasional glass of wine in pregnancy. Now holding a happy, healthy four-week-old in ny arms.

Bigonesmallone3 · 25/12/2018 12:34

Iv always been partial to a small glass of red very occasionally in the third trimester, I would avoid a glass of spirit drink but it was a sip for god sake!
Have another and give MIL a Xmas grin 😁

FirstTimeBumps · 25/12/2018 13:12

38+6 and just had a glass of bucks fizz. OH had told me to have a glass of wine but I really wanted bucks fizz with it being Christmas. I did get awful glares in our local last night whilst drinking non-alcoholic beer. Smile and wave Grin

As others have said, it’ll be absolutely fine. But word of warning, in my pregnancy with DD1 I had a huge craving for Guinness. Had a pint at around 30 weeks (spread out over several hours as two halves). The next day I had a hangover that would floor an elephant. Dreadful. Like I had been out on a Tequila bender. Put me off every doing it again or in subsequent pregnancies!

TinselandToblerones · 25/12/2018 13:28

It probably won’t caise harm but I can’t get my head around why you would risk it.

KimchiLaLa · 25/12/2018 13:29

I also had the occasional glass/sip of wine. Maybe three full drinks in total in the nine months? And my DD, 14 months, is fine.

Whisky2014 · 25/12/2018 13:59

I think it's ok. I'm 6 weeks and have been totally off it although it seems women of older generations say its fine to drink a glass of wine every so often.
I bought ultra low alcohol gin and tonic but I'm missing wine. I doubt a sip of anything would do any harm

problembottom · 25/12/2018 14:00

My Mum is very disapproving about the fact I’ve had the odd glass of wine from about 20 weeks. And obviously I’ve had Buck’s Fizz today! My choice. Smile

suddenlypanicked · 25/12/2018 14:11

Tell her to sod off
I'm having a glass of Cava in the kitchen while I do the roast

suddenlypanicked · 25/12/2018 14:12

I'm 13 weeks pregnant
I have had Buck's Fizz and small glasses of wine occasionally since finding out

welshweasel · 25/12/2018 14:23

34 weeks and had two glasses of fizz today. Baby is pretty much cooked and I’m very happy it’s not going to cause any issues!

bathtimesanity · 25/12/2018 14:28

I think it would be totally fine for a sip. I wouldn't personally though as I'd be so scared of harming the pregnancy. It's only 9 months😃

CarolinePooter · 25/12/2018 14:35

Well there are quite a few Christmas and New Year conceived babies whose parents were quite merry at the time!

TruffleShuffles · 25/12/2018 15:41

I had the odd sip of my husbands drinks throughout my pregnancy and my baby has come out perfectly fine, this included a massive gulp of his G&T as I mixed it up with my non alcoholic version. I would definitely recommend the seedlip non alcoholic gin mixed with tonic though if a G&T is your drink of choice as you get a decent flavour with non of the guilt.

PBobs · 25/12/2018 21:57

Good grief. Don't worry at all! I've had a couple of sips of wine every now and then - although I've not really had a drink for over 1.5 years for other reasons. My friend used to enjoy a glass of wine every now and then throughout her pregnancy. To those saying why risk it - because there is no risk. Problems with alcohol in pregnancy arise from regular consumption of it - often to excess. Not the odd snifter.

MammaSchwifty · 25/12/2018 22:05

A sip is no risk at all. Probably more alcohol in a piece of ripe fruit.

Makes no difference if it's a spirit drink, it's the alcohol by volume that's important and I would expect a home-mixed G&T to be somewhere between beer and weak wine in strength, depending on the generosity of the mixer!

Firsttimer16 · 25/12/2018 22:10

Oh goodness of course you’ll be fine! Don’t give it another thought - I had a glass of bubbles today and enjoyed every sip and am 27 week. I had the same occasional glass every now and then in my first pregnancy too.
To me a lot more dangerous are the risks I face commuting in London each day with roads / trains / buses, and trying to stop my toddler kicking the baby out of my bump while using me as a climbing frame!
Congrats on you’re pregnancy you’re getting close to the finish line!

Iswallowtoothpaste · 25/12/2018 22:18

You won’t have done any harm at all OP.

Your MIL was being melodramatic.

Cloud9889 · 25/12/2018 22:56

I have drunk 1-2 glasses of wine or the equivalent most weeks throughout each of my 3 pregnancies. Avoided more through each first trimester but still did t abstain completely. Bear in mind tho that the advice is to abstain so I’m not saying jump on my booze wagon

ruthieruthuk · 26/12/2018 01:35

Hubby had some violet gin today and I was curious to see what it tasted like, so I had a sip like you the smallest sip and left it at that, I wasn't keen on it tbh - 39wk preg

Babysharkdoodoodoodo · 26/12/2018 02:04

God, I didn't even know I was pregnant until I was nearly 6 months. No weight gain, no bump and still having periods. I was going out to clubs, still smoking etc. Not saying it's a good thing but ds1 is now a strapping 23yr old with no health problems, so I shouldn't imagine a tiny sip is going to cause problems.
I did give up everything when I found out though.
