If I was born early, does that mean my baby is likely to be early?

This might seem like a daft question, but both myself and my siblings were born prior to 37 weeks and all had fairly low birth weights (between 5lb and 6lb). My DH was also 3 weeks early.

I’m currently 27 weeks and trying to arrange when I’m going on maternity leave - because I was a slightly premature baby does that increase my chances of having a premature baby? Anyone had any experiences of this?

There is no proof that this is a thing..

I would plan it for as late as possible. I would go on leave from 34-36 weeks and then I'd have time to relax and sort everything out pre baby

PrivateCello · 21/12/2018 11:37

I am not sure but to share with you, my sister was born around 30/31 weeks and she went on to have 4 children at 40 plus weeks. Good luck, hope all goes well.

Stephisaur · 21/12/2018 11:48

Not necessarily. I was 2 weeks late, DS was 5 days early.

They just come whenever they fancy!

CobaltRose96 · 21/12/2018 12:18

This was one of my worries. I was born at 29 weeks. But, I'll be 29 weeks tomorrow and no sign of baby yet!

Santaispackinghissleigh · 21/12/2018 12:19

The first rule of pregnancy /childbirth is that there aren't really any rules !!

Stuckforthefourthtime · 21/12/2018 12:19

I needed to be induced at 42 weeks... All my babies were born early. Don't think there's necessarily a correlation! Good luck

My mum was 3 weeks early, I was 3 weeks early and I have birth to my son last week at 36 + 4, probably a coincidence but a bit freaky all the same.

I think there may be a correlation but I wouldn't plan when I took my maternity leave around it. With my last pregnancy I worked up until I was induced and I plan on working up until I go into labour with this one. Obviously if you are too sick to work then you will need to stop working earlier than your planned date but I would imagine you would get fed up if you took it too early and were waiting around for weeks!

I was 6 weeks early. Ds 2 weeks late.

Cachailleacha · 21/12/2018 15:48

Exactly the same in my family. My DS was born on his due date and was 8lb.

MsMamaNature · 21/12/2018 15:57

I don't think there is a link - babies come when they are ready! I was born 6 weeks early and my children were all born between 3 and 10 days late. I was 5lbs and they ranged between 8lbs and 9lbs.

Bluebelltulip · 21/12/2018 16:36

I think it depends on what caused you to be early. For example I was born at 35 weeks due to pre-eclampsia and therefore had a higher risk of developing pre-eclampsia with my DD, however I didn't develop it and had DD at 41 weeks.

Blondebrunette1 · 21/12/2018 17:19

A midwife told me once that the father tends to determine that, they're right with mine so far. I was 3 Weeks early. My husband and kids all late besides the one induced early. X

EverythingNow · 21/12/2018 17:42

I was born at 37w as was my sibling. All of our babies have been overdue.

Hospitaldramafamily · 21/12/2018 18:27

I was born at 28 weeks. My son was born at 40 + 6

seeingdots · 21/12/2018 18:31

I made the mistake of thinking DD might come early as I was 3 weeks early myself. Ended up being induced at 42 weeks.

Newbie21 · 23/12/2018 01:34

I was 5 weeks early, sister was 3 weeks. My son was exactly 2 weeks late so I don't think there is any correlation unless there is a genetic issue which affects pregnancy maybe.

moredoll · 23/12/2018 01:47

Nope, I was 10 days early. (caesarian, pre-eclampsia). DD was bang on time.

Worker29 · 23/12/2018 01:52

I was 4 weeks early. All my children (3) have been due date or slightly after.
No idea on their father's side. Which must come into play...

Cherries101 · 23/12/2018 02:09

It depends on the reason. Some nasty pregnancy related conditions can be genetically passed on, for example preclamsia. Really depends on why your mum had you early.

Whatstheirname · 23/12/2018 19:06

Well my mum had me 6 days early, my brother 2 weeks early. DH was 3 weeks early and our daughter was born at exactly 37 weeks! We did spend the whole pregnancy thinking she might be early, there’s no harm in being prepared and having your bags packed in case!

momoa80 · 23/12/2018 22:40

How does it work if the father was prem? I've already 2 children and were both 9lb and 9lb 6 (different father)...cooked well haha. What's the likelihood of new partner influencing this baby?

OutPinked · 24/12/2018 12:46

I don’t there’s a correlation. Both my exH and DP were premature, DP was six weeks premature and exH was five weeks premature. None of my four DC were.

momoa80 · 26/12/2018 18:42

Thanks OutPinked good to know.

FinallyFree123456789 · 26/12/2018 18:53

I was born at 24 weeks + 2 days ....this was around 30 years ago - I had my daughter when I was 21 and she was 39 weeks + 4
