20 Week Scan Prep

Hi everyone,

I've got my 20 week scan tomorrow!

Just a question, do you need to have a full bladder for this one?

The problem is I have a problem with being able to hold my wee in, it gets so uncomfortable and actually quite painful.

I've looked online already and some say you do and some say you don't.

Would appreciate some help! :)

They didn’t mention it at mine. I’ve actually had quite a few scans through the pregnancy and the doctors have never said anything... in fact on my first scan I was asked to empty my bladder

I've had four children and I've never been asked to have a full bladder for any scans apart from 12 weeks or earlier.

I was actually told to make sure my bladder was empty for my 20 week scan

No you don’t! I double checked this preganancy and got told no that’s only for 12 week and last pregnancy I had extra scans between 20-25 weeks and didn’t need to for any of them. I hope all goes well!

The first thing they asked at my 20w was is my bladder full. Baby was in the wrong position and I think it was helpful for them to ask me to go pee to see if that changed things (it didn't - I got to go again at 23w so they could finish checking Grin).

With my second they made me empty my bladder as the couldn't see properly lol

They wrote 'full bladder' on the information sheet that accompanied the letter for my 20 week scan, sonographer got most of their measurements then sent me out to have a wee and a jump up and down to encourage baby to move position so they could get the rest! If nothing else it's quicker to empty your bladder if needed then to fill it up so maybe have a big drink before just in case :)

When I went for my 12-week scan, there were some information posters. They recommended a full bladder for the 12-week scan (although mine was too full, apparently - after two wees I weighed 1.2kg lighter, but they put the heavier weight in my notes!), and a partially-full bladder for the 20-week scan. But, as has been mentioned before, it is easier to empty a bladder than to fill it.

I didn't even think about this! Mine is on Friday, going to have a glass of water before I go and leave it at that, I did this for a private at 17 weeks and pictures were brilliant so don't think there were any issues. Previously I took a litre water bottle and filled myself to bursting haha. Hope all goes well for you :)! Xx

No, definitely not - I had one and was sent away to wee! Best of luck for later.
