What are all your thoughts on this? I didn't know about it until we heard about it antenatal class and then got asked of I wanted to opt for it when doing my birth plan but I have no idea!!

We had the injection for DS and will for DC2 when he/she arrives. The drops are more of a faff and you can't guarantee they get the full dose, the injection is over in seconds.

meow1989 · 12/12/2018 23:47

The drops have he potential to not all go in so underside, vitamin k deficiency carries a real risk of bleeding. We had the IM injection, quick and easy!

meow1989 · 12/12/2018 23:47

Under dose not underside

Stephisaur · 13/12/2018 02:15

We opted for the injection. Got a bit of a scream from him but as I was being stitched up at the time he didn’t get much sympathy from me!

He’d forgotten all about it around 10 seconds later.

I personally know of 2 babies who died from haemorrhagic disease of the newborn, so IMO it is a no brainer.

mumofmunchkin · 13/12/2018 04:02

We’ve had the injection both times and will this time. Neither baby seemed to notice it to be honest.

SuperstarDJ · 13/12/2018 04:20

Both mine had the injection. I don’t really know why some parents choose to opt out tbh.

EmmaJR1 · 13/12/2018 05:21

I agree, the injections about 5 seconds of discomfort and the drops are 2 doses of medicine a few weeks apart so a lot of faff and you can't be sure the baby will swallow them.

Merrydoula · 13/12/2018 10:46

I got the drops, didn't like thought of DS being fresh out of the womb and having a needle. My DS gulped the lot and midwife said it definitely went down! X

Celebelly · 13/12/2018 11:24

We are going for the injection. It's a second or so of discomfort and no faff or worry about them getting enough if they puke up shortly after or the risk of missing a dose.

The NCT has a good page about it: www.nct.org.uk/labour-birth/after-your-baby-born/vitamin-k-injection-or-oral-dose-for-newborns

OutPinked · 13/12/2018 11:38

First world privilege to opt out of any vaccine and the arrogance of parents who do so astonishes me.

Merrydoula · 13/12/2018 12:21

It's also a first world naivety to believe that the human race never survived thousands of years without everything we put in ourselves today, vitamin k has only been used for about 30 odd years, our grandparents that lived to very healthy ages such as my grandmother, died ages 89 would have never had vitamin k or been vaccinated with much at all.

I can't stand those who judge others for their parental choices, everyone should be free to decide what they feel is best. I would never point the finger at a mum who was pro vaccine and say 'Oh you child suddenly got XYZ illness after having the vaccine, you're a rubbish parent etc. Not going to enter a debate about this so I'm off, just wanted to make my point :)

Merrydoula

Go and walk around a churchyard.
Look at the gravestones.
See how many babies and children were buried there around 100 years ago. Many of them along with their young mothers.
Honestly.

TheCag · 13/12/2018 16:06

I’ve opted for the jab both times and will do the same in a few weeks when dc3 arrives. It is upsetting to give them a needle when they are so tiny but I always worried they wouldn’t get the full dose if given orally.

Santababyclaus · 13/12/2018 16:52

My dd had the injection and so will my second. It takes a second and dd didn't even notice it. My understanding is that the risk with the oral drops is that as 3 doses are required that some parents miss the subsequent doses

rebelrosie12 · 13/12/2018 16:56

It's a no brainer. Jab.

bullyingadvice2017 · 13/12/2018 18:05

I did drops for my pfb as I felt bad her having a jab 🙄 she spat it everywhere both times and was a pita. Second one had the jab and cried for 1 minute! Get the jab I say
