Hiya I'm 8+2 with my first baby but I'm really struggling. Nausea and acid reflux have been pretty bad for last few week buts this last few days are awful. I'm being sick every morning (not a lot comes up) but the last few days I feel like I'm going to start being sick pretty much constantly . Acis reflux is 24 hours a day. Also started with trapped wind in middle of night and most evenings the last few days which is mega painful. Everyone I've spoken to says it's all signs of a healthy pregnaancy which is amazing it I feel sooooo ill. Any advice or strategies would be most welcome. I've tried peppermint tea, ginger tea, ginger and rich tea biscuits, eating, not eating, same with drinking. Fluids make me feel more sick. I was managing ok by eating whenever I felt nauseas but that's not working now 😢

Go to the gp about the reflux. I know people can be reluctant to take medications in pregnancy but I had reflux from hell when pregnant with ds and I was proscribed omeprezole and it fixed it right away. One tablet a day and it went. It was a life saver!!

Sorry to hear you're feeling shit.

I had HG to term with both of my pregnancies; I literally did nothing else for 9 months except vomit, sleep and make periodic hospital trips.

My best advice is to adjust your mindset. Try the remedies (ginger the best natural one), but be prepared for nothing to work and to grit your teeth and bear it. Accepting it helps a bit.

That said, I did have antidepressants in second pregnancy to get me through it mentally, although my case was quite extreme and you probably won't need to resort to this.

Good luck!

I second getting omeprazole from GP - though I have to take double dosage otherwise I wake up in the night. If I delay taking it it comes back with a vengeance! Not totally cured but 100x better.

So sorry about your other symptoms, not sure what else to suggest... I found it more comfortable to lie in a kind of half side half tummy position with a pillow under your tummy for wind. Pregnancy certainly ain’t glamorous!! 🙈

Thankyou for the replies. Whoopsies, I've chatted to doc a couple of times and have another appt tomoro. They don't seem keen to give anything out due to it not being proven to be safe. That scared me and then didn't know what to do.
Delta, you might not be far off. I'm starting counselling for anxiety next week which was happening before I was pregnant so hoping it will help. I'm always a wimp when I'm ill but I currently feel more ill than I tho k I ever have in my life!
It will all be worth it, I'l keep trying the ginger xx

I feel for you I really do. It shall pass but in the meantime it is hard going. I have just been through a bad spell with MS with my second pregnancy and am so appreciating feeling better now.

Definitely get in touch with your GP I needed to this time and did end up with some medication which absolutely took the edge off. I was able to tolerate fluids better and eat some. Not a totally magic fix as I still felt very drained and poorly BUT it was definitely more manageable. Constantly feeling like you are going to be sick and awful reflux is grim and very wearing. The GP will be able to give you something to try that is safe for the pregnancy. I had to take the View that as little as I wanted to take tablets baby needed me to be hydrated first and foremost and also able to eat something.

Other suggestions that might help - ice lollies (I liked mini callipos). Help with fluid and went down easier than a drink.

Also I found weak warm squash - just topped off with a bit of hot from the kettle easier to drink than water.

Hang in there OP! It’s eyes on the prize time and as hideous as you feel now it is soon forgotten about when you past this stage. I’ve done it twice now.

DinoMamasaurus · 12/12/2018 18:29

Just seen you last post OP - the tablets I had were cyclizine they are more for nausea than reflux but they are fine to take in pregnancy. My Drs were the other way around. I spoke to 2 separate GPs and it was more them convincing me to give the tablets a go and I’m so glad I did.

I also have friends who have been prescribed omeprazole in pregnancy. It helped them and no problems with it!

YorkshireWelsh · 12/12/2018 18:29

I had horrendous indigestion/reflux in ‘early’ pregnancy (from about 4-5 weeks when I found out I was pregnant, until about 24 weeks!) which stopped me sleeping and resulted in almost 24/7 pain/discomfort. I found McDonald’s milkshake helped! Don’t know if you can stomach it, but it was advice from other MNs and it worked for me, even if I could just manage a little bit it seemed to calm the acid. Plus it’s full of calories so it helps give you some energy.
Don’t get me wrong it’s far from a healthy food choice, but if you’re struggling to keep anything down it might be worth a go?

Bluejellybaby · 12/12/2018 18:49

Thanks for that I will try and find a mcds. I can keep food down, actual sickness is always first thing on a morning but I just feel constantly sick all the time. When I'm eating it's ok, as soon as I stop it's wham bam back to feeling like I'm going to be sick. Ugh.
I will def ask more about tablets tomorrow. :)

I found the best thing for me was a glass of water, with lots of ice so that it was freezing cold, it really helped I was so sick and acidy, I'm 13 weeks now and thankfully those symptoms have gone!

sohypnotic · 12/12/2018 20:26

Gaviscone is harmless, I drank bottles of the stuff throughout pregnancy and it helped keep the acid reflux. I was also prescribed a peppermint oil capsule, which helped a bit with wind and constipation.

GabbyGal · 12/12/2018 21:49

OP I feel your pain. I suffer badly with reflux anyway due to a hiatus hernia and was on esomeprazole for it before I found out I was pregnant. Two different GPs have told me it’s perfectly safe but I tried to go without anyway and I was as miserable as you, I was barely eating. I think I’ve read everything on the internet about what to try and what medications are safe!

My GP suggested trying ranitidine (Zantac over the counter) first as it’s one of the oldest medications for reflux and has been proven to be safe. It has been working well up to now but now I’m having to use gaviscon as well. Still far better than I was without it. If it keeps getting worse I think eventually I’ll have to go back on esomperazole/omeprazole.

Whoopsies · 13/12/2018 06:59

@GabbyGal thanks that's helpful. I take ranitidine now and had read it was safe in pregnancy but been meaning to get to the gp to check! (My heartburn never left after my last pregnancy unfortunatly!) I'd rather take somerging otc especially ad it's so cheap to buy (79p for 12 tablets in home bargain!)

wonderstuff · 13/12/2018 07:10

Its miserable! Your symptoms sound like my second pregnancy, at one point I called 111 in tears my GP had said to take gavisgon and it made me feel awful, she recommended trying different antacid tablets and actually chewy rennies did the trick, I got through so many of them that pregnancy. It was miserable from start to finish, I didn’t feel better until the moment I gave birth and omg the relief! I was on cloud 9 for 6 months, the baby was lovely but not being pregnant was amazing!

mumofmunchkin · 13/12/2018 07:14

The only things I found to help at all (though I was never bad enough to need medication) was getting plenty of sleep, and eating something (even dry crackers) before I even got out of bed in the morning.

le42 · 13/12/2018 07:17

I was at the stage where I was sleeping 1/2 hours a night as I couldn’t lie down for the acid...Literally nothing has worked for me except omeprazole - I’ve tried all home remedies plus gaviscon, rennies everything. I couldn’t take it during a fast yesterday morning and it came back horribly... I would definitely go to GP and get something prescribed if it persists

Bluejellybaby · 13/12/2018 18:24

I went to the doctors today. They gave me cyclizine so have had my first one. Fingers crossed! The pillow advice worked a trick last night though, ten hours sleep! Thanks le42! Xx
