Back spasms

I’m getting upper back spasms just below my shoulders. I’m 18 weeks on Friday- for the last few weeks my back has been aching as the days gone on but yesterday morning I woke up and I was having spasms when I move, kind of like a jolt. I’m lying here tonight and I’m despairing- anyone else experienced this? I’ve got the midwife tomorrow morning thank god.

I had this around the same time as you. Mine was a muscula issue. I think it was around the time I was changing my sleeping position as the bump got bigger. It was so uncomfortable, but it did stop after several days. I didn’t take anything for it in the end....although I’d concentrate a hot shower head at the location of the pain.

I had my baby 2 weeks ago and it came back a few days later....I think the weight shift from carrying a large baby. I’m now
on painkillers for it....and it’s slowly getting better. I also managed to get a little physio for it while I was still in hospital.

Hope yours gets better soon and all the best with the pregnancy x

Thanks so much for getting back to me! And congratulations on your little one! I took some ibuprofen in the night which seems to have helped...although I haven’t got up yet. It’s definitely reassuring to know I’m not the only one x

Just be careful with the ibuprofen - it's not advised to be taken in pregnancy, normally. Hope your pain gets better - magnesium spray is good for muscular pain.

Yes- don’t take ibuprofen again. Try paracetamol instead. Hope the pain eases op

At 18 weeks, it is extremely unlikely that the ibuprofen has caused any issues, by the way. It’s not advised at the beginning, and it can cause extremely unfortunate things to happen if you take it later on, but 18 weeks should be a comparatively safe time. I don’t mean that you should take it again, but you are very unlikely to have done any harm with that dose, so you shouldn’t worry about it. I hope that your back problems go away very quickly.

Thanks everyone- I definitely won’t take ibuprofen again - I’ve got paracetamol and heat packs from the pharmacy xx
