Inconclusive pregnancy test

Geordie86 · 02/12/2018 09:33

After miscarriage last year I'm terrified. I have done 3 clear blue which came back pregnant 1-2 week. I went to my doctor's where the results came back inconclusive, Friday gone, and was told to take a new sample in on Monday. IV been testing all weekend at different times with cheaper tests and 3 cheap ones have faint positive. IV never heard of an inconclusive pregnancy test and I'm worried so much after last time and don't know what to think. Has anybody else had an inconclusive at the doctor's?

Inconclusive is an odd response. Did you see the test? Maybe it was very faint like you’re getting at home.

Geordie86 · 02/12/2018 09:36

No i did not see test as the doctor's sent sample to the lab and they sent results back as inconclusive. The doctor did not do a test at the surgery.

Are the lines getting darker? Usually (in my experience anyway) the lines get progressively darker each day you test.

Geordie86 · 02/12/2018 09:48

The 3 clear blue were digital. The 3 cheap test look the same. I don't think they look darker but I used one yesterday morning and again last night and another this morning but the lines have not got darker, maybe because I'm not leaving enough time between tests? I'm becoming obsessed after last miscarriage and testing daily as I'm confused and scared, it will be my second time pregnant. The 1st time I found out I was pregnant and miscarrying on the same day so I'm being really overcautious,

I found out I was pregnant at 4+1, then had to go to A&E for some bleeding at 4+4 where I got a negative on a urine test (following a positive strip and digital at home). My blood test was positive but with low hcg so I had to go back for another test after 48 hours to check the levels had doubled. I’m now nearly 24 weeks.

The doctors weren’t very positive at the time and said it would either be bad news or that I could be earlier than I thought, but my 12 week scan confirmed my dates. I obviously just had very low hcg at that time but it was all fine.

One of the midwives specifically told me not to do more tests. They’re not designed to really show how pregnant you are, as so many factors (especially how concentrated your urine is) can influence the results. A dark/light line doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

Geordie86 · 02/12/2018 10:49

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm really happy to hear that! Congratulations!! I'm probably being over careful but I can't help it, I was thinking my lines should be getting stronger stressing a bit when they weren't. I have a lot of health problems and was told at fertility clinic I couldn't get pregnant then miscarried last year when I didn't know I was pregnant so I'm just really scared the doc will say it's negative or something because IV wanted a baby for so long.
I do hope everything goes well with the rest of your pregnancy and thank you again for taking the time to msg me.

A miscarriage definitely makes any subsequent prengnancy stressful. I was the same when I got pregnant following my miscarriage. Flowers

I think hcg doubles every 48 hours, and it’s mosy concentrated with first morning urine, so perhaps you are testing too often. I know it’s tempting to test lots though, so I understand. I did so myself.

A positive test is still a positive though, so sounds promising.

Good luck Smile

Im so sorry , It's an awful thing happen. Mine took weeks to complete it was agony. It just doesn't make sense to be inconclusive to me but I guess I'll have to wait and find out for sure 🤞
I'm not the most patient person at the best of times 😂
It is too tempting the bf not impressed with how many I'm buying/doing he just says to relax coz he believes the home tests but I just need to know 😬😂
Thank you so much I'll take all the luck I can 😊

I was the same. I had a miscarriage at 7 weeks back in June and as soon as I started getting faint positives again after, I must have gotten through maybe 10 tests??

If youre getting a positive, no matter how faint, there is HCG in your system. Assuming you had a clear negative after the miscarriage, it means you've conceived again. The problem with testing so early though is that it's easy to get your hopes up then miscarry again early or have a chemical pregnancy. I know its easier said than done, but if you can wait a few days before trying again you'll have a clearer answer.

Also, its kinda false economy to use the cheaper tests. They have lower sensitivity so need more HCG to show as positive. I did exactly the same but if you buy less sensitive tests and test early, you won't really get answers.

Angelmiracle · 02/12/2018 11:29

I was getting a pink line on the first response early result test at 3+4 weeks but Not Pregnant on the clear blue digital! I waited another 2 weeks and got 3+weeks on the clear blue digital.

It's a good sign you are getting a positive on it. The cheapies never got darker much with me & the Health Service tend to use these too. The first response early result tests got progressively darker each day with first morning urine.

I'm sorry to hear about your MC and good luck for this pregnancy!

Geordie86 · 02/12/2018 11:41

Congratulations!! Thank you all so much. I used 3 CB week indicator test over 7 days last week and got 1-2 weeks but since the inconclusive at GP IV been testing with the cheapest u can find as I heard that they are all GP's use anyway? So I'm hoping if they work at home at random times at home then surely the GP test will be more conclusive when I do sample Monday??
I'm 9 days late for period and apart from very mild cramp (I'm usually really bad for cramping each month) and sore breasts I feel no signs of monthly, it's just going to be a long wait I just wish I could know NOW! 😂

Did you get any more news? Fingers crossed for you Smile

Geordie86 · 04/12/2018 13:06

Hi, I got the results back today from my sample I handed in yesterday and again it's come back inconclusive. 😡 They have said it's something to do with the sample bottles and asked me to hand another sample in tomorrow morning. It's driving me crazy. I'm still testing at home and still getting positive results, the nurse and doctor are confident it will be positive but the wait and inconclusive results are confusing, I will post when I have hear back just keeping everything crossed ATM!

NotAnotherUserName5 · 04/12/2018 16:24

How frustrating.Sad I’m surprised they haven’t done the bloods, to see if the hcg is doubling as it should, rather than repeatedly making you do urine samples.

Sounds very promising though-you are getting positive tests at home, your period is missing. Flowers

Geordie86 · 04/12/2018 17:22

Hi 🙂 I called the doctor's because I'm mega stressed that something might be wrong, he said they won't do bloods until the lab get a positive with urine. So frustrating! So I done another clearblue digital about 3.30 this afternoon and I got another positive saying 2-3 weeks now, which is kinda making me think my levels must be rising as it was saying 1-2 weeks last week?!
I explained how terrified I am and as sympathetic as he was, he said to wait until Thursday to hand the new sample in 😩
I'm going crazy!

OP posts:
BertramKibbler · 04/12/2018 17:25

Your levels are definitely rising and you’re definitely pregnant with those hpt results.

In the kindest possible way, no amount of tests will change the course of your pregnancy. It’s its healthy it’s healthy, and if it isn’t it sadly isn’t.

Please try to calm down Flowers I’ve been there. I didn’t enjoy a second of my pregnancy after multiple miscarriages and it was such a waste.

Geordie86 · 04/12/2018 17:44

Thank you for that, it's nice to know it's not just in my head and at least somebody else thinks the same as me (that levels must be rising)
It's just scary after having a miscarriage isn't it. I'm not testing no more at home, it's just getting expensive 😂 I just want to know one so I can get excited and make plans ect instead I'm in limbo ☹️
I do understand where your coming from and I'm going with my gut feeling and the now 5 positive tests! The doctor's must just be slow 😂 fingers crossed it all goes well. I appreciate the comments massively! Thank you so much. Will update when I know for sure 🤞🤞🤞

Update
Tuesday 4th Dec I got another inconclusive result from GP. Something to do with the sample bottle or something, on Wednesday I had brown bleeding/discharge so I went to A&E who did a quick test which came back negative I was told to test again in a week. Obviously I couldn't wait and I came home and done another CB week test which has went up from 1-2 last week to 2-3 weeks positive on Wednesday night. Today I took another non digital which also says positive (pics included) anyone have any thoughts on what might be going in?? I'm getting really scared and the wait is stressing me out, I don't j own what to think, any help or advice would be great 🌹

Can you afford a private scan? If so, in a week when you’re around 6 weeks I’d do another test and then maybe arrange a scan. At 6-7 weeks the baby should have a heart beat and will be very much there

Geordie86 · 07/12/2018 11:18

Thanks for your reply, Yes I can afford a private scan it's just trying to guess when I can book one for. I just thought my levels would be good enough for GP/hospital to pick something up by now, IV no idea how the dating works? Would I be far enough by next week? The last time I found out I was pregnant and MC the same day so it's all new to me, it's the first time IV had positive home tests so I'm just really unsure,

This is so frustrating for you Flowers

I’ve no idea why you keep getting these inconclusive tests. It’s odd. Your lines are nice and clear on the blue dye test.

Did you bleed much?

When was your period due? I’m trying to figure out how many weeks you are likely to be.
Bleeding in pregnancy isn’t always the worst case. I bled with my son terribly, and all went ok.
I hope you get some good news soon

Lymphy · 08/12/2018 20:53

Can I ask is the sample from the GP red or white topped?? If you can recall

Lymphy · 08/12/2018 20:56

Also I’m wondering if you got a neg at A&E if there’s a batch of faulty tests in that hospital (I work in contraception and we had a faulty batch some years ago so it’s slim but possible)

Geordie86 · 09/12/2018 07:25

Hi sorry for the delayed reply. I am currently at my early pregnancy ward waiting to go for investigative surgery as a scan has shown a mass by my left tube. I finally got the positive result from hospital and have been kept in over night. Apologies if I'm not making much sense, pain meds are strong. I'm keeping everything crossed that is a blood clot (as has been suggested) and not the baby growing in the wrong place. I would only be about 4-5 weeks. I'm terrified. Thank you for all your messages, I will update once I know more.
