my friends just found out she's pregnant last night, she's staying with me as she's having issues with her parents, her periods are on and off and not reliable and she doesn't know when her last period was.

from the tests attached how far along would you say she is ?

Also she's experiencing quite bad pains in her tummy and back, she's not booked in with a midwife yet as she's only just found out but where does she go in terms of having a scan to make sure everything is okay ? Does she go to A&E ? Do we go to the emergency antenatal triage ?

You can find out how far along for pregnancy tests I’m afraid! Call 111 for advice re pains. Hope she’s okay

Wingingthis · 01/12/2018 23:12

Can she figure out when she had sex?

1998em · 01/12/2018 23:13

she has had sex with her partner continuously for months, so she literally has no idea when she's conceived, she said she had a period about 6 weeks ago, but it was light for her x

Hi 1998em. As my username suggests I haven't had to use a pregnancy test in a long while, so I have no idea if they give a length of pregnancy time line. May I ask how old you and your friend are? The usual thing is to go to the GP and say ' I have a positive pregnancy test' and everything else is put into place.

1998em · 01/12/2018 23:19

She's 18 and I'm 20, not really sure why our age matters though. We are more concerned about her pains and want to know whether she should go to a & e or the antenatal triage ? @elephantoverthehill

1998em · 01/12/2018 23:21

@elephantoverthehill also we are going to sort her booking appointment on Monday but we just wanted to know if she could go to hospital and get checked because this pain is quite severe x

Call 111, they will give advice and arrange an out of hours appointment if they think she needs to be seen tonight.

1998em · 01/12/2018 23:22

Also ovbiously the darker the line the more hcg in your system i.e. the more likely you are to be further along x

When I was early pregnant I went to a&e and then they sent me to the early pregnancy unit - if she's in pain go to a&e and let them send her wherever needs to be.

Also the clear blue test says 3+ ... this could be anything - mine said 3+ and I was 11 weeks pregnant

elephantoverthehill · 01/12/2018 23:24

@1998em Sorry for asking your age, I just wanted to know if I might be replying to 14 year olds. I would suggest 111. I hope everything turns out ok.

SockQueen · 01/12/2018 23:29

If the pain is bad enough that she feels she needs to be seen tonight, she should go to A&E/walk in centre if you have one nearby. Antenatal triage is for later in pregnancy, at this stage she probably needs seeing in the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit but most of these are not open 24/7 so A&E for assessment and referral on to gynae if needed.

It's impossible to date a pregnancy reliably from tests alone, but a period 6 weeks ago and 3+ on CBD suggests she's probably at least 6 weeks. Could be more if that was an implantation bleed but for accurate dating she needs a scan.

TokenGinger · 02/12/2018 03:06

With 3+ weeks, she is at least 5 weeks pregnant, so you may be able to see a sac on an ultrasound. It sounds like dating at six weeks for now is wise, dating back to her period. That's what all medical professionals will go off, regardless of whether it was light or not.

A&E will do nothing. You're best going to an early pregnancy assessment unit.

SpasticClunge · 02/12/2018 03:26

I'd say anywhere between 5 weeks and 9 months

Meganc559 · 02/12/2018 08:44

I had really really bad back painbefore I knew I was pregnant and I was about 4 weeks at the time, sometimes it's just implantation pains x

IceBearRocks · 02/12/2018 08:57

considering it could be a new pregnancy of at least 5 weeks ..it could be a miscarriage or ectopic ..try the EPU!

1998em · 02/12/2018 09:41

@SpasticClunge not really needed but okay

@IceBearRocks that's exactly my worry, she went to walk in a few weeks back with this pain and they said it was most likely a water injection and sent her away, but ovbiously know she knows she is pregnant shes worried somethings wrong, she doesn't have a clue about pregnancy so I don't even think it would come into her head that it could be ectopic but that's my worry x

Severe pain should be checked. Early pregnancy unit in a hospital is the place to do this. Put her postcode in here to find the nearest one: www.aepu.org.uk/find-a-unit/

TokenGinger · 02/12/2018 11:12

I don't mean this to sound patronising, OP, but if she doesn't know much about pregnancy as you say, could the pains be wind? This is my first pregnancy and in the first six weeks, I couldn't believe how painful the trapped wind was inside my tummy and my back. It was awful.

I got some tips off here to go on all fours and press my chest to the ground to release it.

I didn't realise it was wind at first as it felt so painful.

They’re good, strong positives and the CB weeks indicatior shows that your friend is at least 5 weeks gone (date from last mestrual period as that’s when your cycle begins again)

She needs to get a GP appointment ASAP and be referred to a MW. She needs to explain that her periods are irregular, that she’s at least 5 weeks but she could be more.

As for the stomach and back pain, that can be normal in early pregnancy. I’m 13+5 and am still having period pains and had back ache from around 8 weeks.

With regards to a scan, they don’t usually scan you until you’re at least 6-7 weeks gone and even then they’ll usually only do it if you’ve experienced any spotting or bleeding. There’s not much to see on a scan before this point.

1998em · 02/12/2018 18:24

Hi everyone ! I took her to A&E this morning and we were taken to an antenatal triage, she saw a doctor; they checked the neck of her womb and for any pain and felt her tummy, all was fine, did her bloods, her hcg is 7934, so either she's about 7 weeks going off that or it's twins as she does already have a bump and is experiencing quite a lot of symptoms, twins run in the fathers family so maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️ they didn't seem too concerned about the pain and said it was probably settling in pains and some women can get them very extreme. She has had pain in her shoulder tho which is a sign of ectopic pregnancy so they have her back on Tuesday for more bloods to see if her hcg doubles and have also booked her for a scan on Thursday so we will know if all is well by then; thanks for everyone's answers x
