Dental abscess

Has anyone ever had a dental abscess in pregnancy? I'm 12 weeks on Thursday and all I can obviously take is paracetomal. The pain is driving me absolutely insane and I won't be able to see a dentist to Monday though I don't think I can last that long 😪😪

Hi @meganmc0301

How awful can only imagine the pain! I wouldn’t take anything else, have you tried any natural methods? (I know you probably want something stronger!! but Clove oil is supposed to be good - I’d check if you could use that tho)

I’m thinking it may be a little late but if you call 111 they will put you in touch with an emergency dentist rather than wait till Monday. I’ve used the service before and they sorted my wisdom tooth out (shaved it) until I could go to the dentist. I wasn’t pregnant then but I’m sure the emergency dentist will be able to help / give you some advice. If I was you I’d probably try 111 to see what they say as you’re in a lot of pain if not you may need to wait until tomorrow.

Hope you feel better soon 💜

Thanks for the reply @Anyat212

Unfortunately we can't use 111 here because in from Northern Ireland 😪 it's the worst ever. I've tried clove oil and raw garlic (apparently that's good for abscesses- would not recommend its vile 🤮🤮). I may just keep using paracetomal and hope for the best.. got my hot water bottle on it at the minute and it's taking the edge off. I just hope for some sleep tonight!! Xx

You are allowed codeine. They gave it to me at maternity triage for some serious pelvic pain at 21 weeks.

Yes I have - and I feel your pain! Which tooth is it? Mine was my wisdom tooth and I just flushed it out as much as possible and used chlorhexidine rinse.

Had said impacted wisdom tooth treated a couple of weeks ago (not extracted but a coronectomy) and the few days after without Ibuprofen was HELL!! Was counting down the minutes until my next paracetamol doses!!

Oh OP. I can't offer much in the way of advice, but I had a tooth abscess (wisdom tooth) a few years ago. I wasn't pregnant at the time and could take all the meds I needed and still found it horrible!
However the dentist put me on antibiotics and the pain had basically disappeared within 24 hours. Do you have a dentist you can get an emergency appointment with?

This link might help: www.hscboard.hscni.net/our-work/integrated-care/dental-services/out-of-hours-emergency-dental-treatment/. Toothache is awful

There are antibiotics that are safe in pregnancy. Though if it's only just started, you could get away with antibacterial medical mouthwash (only send someone else who doesn't tell them it's for a pregnant woman).
