Spotting in second trimester

Hi all. I’m 18+6. After using the toilet this afternoon (BM, if relevant), I’ve noticed a smudge of blood on the tissue when I wiped. Not sure what to do, I don’t want to panic. I’ve had some pains in my tummy but haven’t felt baby at all, although I haven’t felt them moving very consistently anyway yet.

In my last pregnancy, I had a lot of episodes of bleeding due to infection and a cervical erosion.

Should I just keep an eye on it?

I had some spotting at around 20 weeks and called maternity triage - they weren’t concerned and told me to keep an eye on it because it was brown blood. They did say that any red bleeding should be checked out and would have asked me to go in had it been red. What type of bleeding have you got? In my experience it’s better to call triage than not...

I’ve been to the loo since (several times) but not noticed any further spotting.

It was red but also seemed to be mixed with mucus.

I has a tiny bit of red blood at 19 weeks. (Has also had briwn bleeds v. Early on). Went to EPU at they checked and it was nothing. Also after a BM. I now think it was eaither strain from the BM as everything is very engorged with blood, or a v v bad haemariod as I’d been constipated as hell week before. The mucus can also be from BM (had IBS pre pregnancy and if I was constipated I would sometimes get mucus with a BM). Like you, I’d had inconsistent movement but you did the right thing to call them.

What did they do to check that all was well, Blondiecub0109?

Doppler four heartbeat and movement a cervix check. It was a Friday evening so no sonographer, and our 20 week scan was the following week so they weren’t at all concerned. V reassuring tho . When is your 20 week scan?

Blondiecub0109 · 30/11/2018 16:24

Oh I’ve confused the OP and the first reply, OP you should call EPU/ triage just to chat it through with them

Blondiecub0109 · 30/11/2018 16:25

And argh typos/autocorrects ....

Blastandtroph · 30/11/2018 16:29

Call maternity triage where you are booked. They will ask you some more questions. If they ask you in (they may not) they may want to do a speculum to look at your cervix.

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 30/11/2018 17:26

No worries Blondiecub0109. Scan is not for a couple of weeks. I’m worried about wasting their time if it’s nothing, especially as there’s a chance it’s not related to baby at all and just a bit of strain on the loo!

@FrazzyAndFrumpled I would always recommend giving triage a wee call for any bleeding, even a little bit.
If they think it's fine they will just tell you not to come in.
If there's a chance it is something then you will be seen. Trust me, no-one will think you're wasting time.
