Bodysuit confusion

We found out today dd, 17, is expecting a girl.
We’ve bought quite a few clothes including long and short sleeved bodysuits.
Some are plain, more like vests that fasten under the legs. But others have little collars.
I’m confused about whether they’re meant to be worn under babygros/sleepsuits? I guess so. And some outfits we’ve brought consist of a jacket and soft trousers so would they wear a bodysuit with them and a top?
I guess it boils down to whether bodysuits are underwear or not?
And do they need vests and bodysuits?
I’m a confused grandmother to be as dds are adopted so I didn’t have them from babies.

Bodysuits are underwear and outerwear depending on temperature! I put plain ones under sleepsuits or longer sleeved tops and skirts / trousers but I’d put the ones with little collars or in this weather long sleeved ones under dungarees or sleeveless dresses so they are on show or with a skirt or trousers of it was warm enough that they didn’t need two layers on.

Congratulations to you and DD! I use bodysuits as underwear. I have some with pretty sleeves I put under dungarees. I like to put a plain one underneath but my sister (self declared baby guru Grin) has said it’s not needed.

Ok, thanks, both, I don’t think I explained myself very clearly but that’s what I thought - plain as underwear and patterned or fancy (collars etc) so they can be seen.
There’s just so much choice out there - patterned, plain, long sleeves, short sleeves, strappy ones!

It’s so confusing isn’t it! For reference the Gro company (who make sleeping bags amongst other things) have a handy guide on their website about how many layers the baby should be wearing at what temperature. It’s mainly important at night when they can overheat. It gives a good idea though! Plus I always go with the rule that the baby should be in one more later than you...

Congratulations Grandma!

Thanks, Monkey.

I wouldn't put vest and bodysuit, one or the other or there would be a lot of crotch poppers Grin

I use them as underwear with sleepsuits/rompers/dungarees or under trousers and cardi/jumper, or as the only top layer with trousers in warm temps

We’ve bought a few t shirts today too, to wear over a body suit, maybe wth shorts on a hot day.but then maybe they’d be too hot 🤷🏼‍♀️
I just googled vests after Mamma’s post but guess you mean bodysuits as most places don’t do vests as such for babies.
