Anyone who knows me knows I like a cigarette and a drink - how do I hide this with so many events coming up??

Particularly work ones! Help! X

Make up a reason that means you have to drives d therefore not drink? Partners ill etc so want to be able to dash back. If people ask if you want to come outside for a cigarette say you have just had one.

Or.
Drink alcoholic looking drinks. I covered one pregnancy by drinking cranberry juice saying it was vodka cranberry. Elderflower looks a lot like Prosecco once in a flute.

Good luck, and congratulations!

Mineral water with a slice of lemon = G&T
Giving up the fags before a NY resolution/to save money
Training for a run in the New Year?
After a few drinks your friends won't notice anyway
All the best Smile

I pretend to drink, fake G&T / Vodka soda and lime. Basically just those drinks without the G / V!

I am thinking my work christmas party will be an issue as its wine on the table but I'm gonna drive saying my childcare cant stay late so will have half a glass of wine, pretending to sip it now and then and make my excuses.

Congratulations SmileThanks

If it's a big party stick with just mixers and tell others it has vodka/gin in it.

If it's a gathering at your house do the same, or secretly top up your own non alcoholic wine/cider etc.

If it's a very small gathering (a few people out for dinner) don't try to hide it as it looks too obvious. Just say you're not drinking. Either just say you're not drinking as you're giving your liver a break/up early tomorrow/on call etc or do the antibiotics lie. I know people often don't believe it, but I had a tooth abscess a few christmases ago and had no issues because I was quite specific (btw-say you have a tooth abscess and are on metronidazole. Even when you feel better and have finished them for 48 hours it's dangerous to drink alcohol).

Also, I agree with PP re smoking. Say you're cutting down or have just had one x

IrishCypriot · 29/11/2018 09:25

Thank you for all of your comments!
Wasn't expecting a reaction so fast so I appreciate that.

Got my first event tonight and I'm freaking out, as if somebody guesses correctly and runs their mouth I'll be so upset because when the time comes to announce, everyone will say "knew it!".

It's only my first pregnancy but I've seen it happen to other friends and family - all it takes is one big mouth to ruin it!

Even when people do suspect, I wish they'd respect the secrecy and have the decency to at least feign surprise when the time comes.

(I know not everyone is like this btw - I am just unfortunately associated with a load of big mouths - not by choice, may I add!)

@irishcypriot I have worried about the same and this weekend just gone i think people may have twigged but luckily noone said anything.

How far along are you?

IrishCypriot · 29/11/2018 10:12

Hi @whiteonesugar
I'll be 5 weeks on Saturday
So still very early days, hence why I don't want anyone other than close family to know at this point. How about you?

Well done for making it through the first event! It's going to be ever so strange being the only sober one on a night out. I don't drive so have never even had to be the designated driver! Haha x

I am coming up to 10 weeks now there have been a few times I havent drunk but pretended to! Even fizzy water with lots of ice and lime looks like a drink.

I drive so thats been my main excuse!

Melamine · 29/11/2018 11:14

I find walking around with a glass of wine &taking tiny (or pretend ) sips is very effective. No one notices you aren’t drinking much as they are too busy throwing it back.

gendercritter · 29/11/2018 14:27

So many people are on a diet these days, just say you're on a huge health kick and seeing how you feel without drink for a few weeks

AmyDowdensLeftLeftShoe · 29/11/2018 14:37

If you had an event the day before simply say you are too tired and hung over to drink today plus you think you have a cold coming on. I've done that many times before I was pregnant and even when I was pregnant but didn't know.

Cakeandslippers · 29/11/2018 15:41

I tried loads of these ideas, they all sort of worked - in that some people didn't realise - but most people who know me well guessed!
Everyone was great though, no one made any comments or spread any rumours until I announced it...although they all told me they had guessed already once I did!

Teakind · 29/11/2018 16:35

For work Christmas parties, I had non alcoholic wine in my handbag! I tipped my real wine down the loo and refilled my glass. No one noticed anything.

MrsRyan15 · 29/11/2018 16:57

I might have to try the tooth abscess one, we go to our local pub most Friday nights and more around Christmas.

The bar staff will question if I just order just a tonic rather than a G&T and it's small pub so it won't be a secret that I'm not drinking.

sar302 · 29/11/2018 18:12

Definitely always have a drink in your hand. People never notice you're not drinking if you have a drink in your hand. If you suddenly start ordering mocktails, they may start the irritating guessing game.

Congrats!

IrishCypriot · 29/11/2018 18:55

Have decided to swerve tonight because I'm actually feeling pretty tired and nauseous. Only 4+5 but I swear I've been walking around with a lump in my throat for the past week.

Thanks for all the suggestions though. Won't be able to pull a sickie every time not to go.

I know it's a bit unreasonable but as it is early days as well I just want to wrap up in cotton wool and not do anything until I'm 3/12!
