Hi all when do you go for your first midwife appointment? It's been 5 years so I can't remember the whole process lol oh and I'm in the UK

I had mine at 7 weeks. I just told the receptionist at the GP that I was pregnant and she booked me in :)

I had mine at 10 weeks. You do a self-referral to a midwife at my doctors. The GP's don't see you at all.

mumoftwo1988 · 28/11/2018 17:58

Thanks il ring the doctors tomorrow

Depends on the area what the process is, but your GP reception should be able to tell you.

Mostly you are seen between 6-10 weeks, depending on your location. Sometimes you'll do it through the local hospital so you know your 12week scan dates and MW appointment from one referral, in my area (both I've been pregnant in) you refer to the MW through the GP and then she arranges the dating scan from that appointment.

I remember it as the most disappointing appointment ever. I don't know what I expected! A fanfare and balloons! What I got was a perfectly sensible " well that's great news, isn't it. I'll refer you to a midwife. She'll see you in a few months. Take care and read this leaflet"

I wanted trumpets and applause. Grin

Diane0313 · 28/11/2018 18:31

I had mine yesterday and I am 9 weeks and 3 days xx

jq28 · 28/11/2018 19:15

I had to see my
GP first and then the midwife called to
Book me in... so it's different in some areas cuz this was last week!

SoyDora · 28/11/2018 19:16

About 9-10 weeks. Never saw a GP first, just phoned the surgery and self referred to the midwife.
Congratulations!

Stormwhale · 28/11/2018 19:19

I had mine at 11 weeks, whereas most of my friends had them closer to 8 weeks during their pregnancies. I think it's just a very busy time for the service at the minute.

babystripes · 29/11/2018 18:48

I was 6 weeks went to my Gp they made a referral to the midwife and I was called at 9 weeks for booking in appointment congrats

Another quick question.. do you still get to hear baby's heartbeat and the first midwife appointment?

OP posts:
Hollywhiskey · 01/12/2018 13:24

I didn't, i first heard it at 16 weeks. My friend who is pregnant now said they aren't checking the heart beat until after the 20 week scan now because half the time they can't find it where baby is so small and it just stresses people out.

SoyDora · 01/12/2018 13:29

Not at the first one. Some let you listen to the heartbeat at the 16 week appointment, a lot don’t do it until 24 weeks.

thismeansnothing · 01/12/2018 13:50

It's all changed where I live since my last pregnancy (there's a near 7 year gap) you can self refer online now but it isn't very well advertised I only stumbled upon it when looking for something else.

My booking in appointment was at 8 weeks and it was only half an appointment, mainly to get the bloods. Then you ring up yourself to arrange your 12 week scan. Then after your scan you have the latter bit of your booking appointment where they do the rest of your paperwork/form filling. But if a faff but didn't feel as rushed.
