Ultrasound

Hello mums, I've had my first ultrasound scan Monday passed (26/11/18). It was so magical, baby had the hiccups and was hiding in the corner of my womb. When the nurse got a good angle on the baby it had fallen asleep, so I did a little wiggle to wake it up and we were successful in getting a decent look. Everything is apparently perfect, and we could even see its little heart beating away... One problem... We were so in awe by seeing our baby for the first time, we didn't even ask about hearing the heartbeat! There was no sound, just the image, not I'm feeling really upset that I didn't get to hear those tiny little thuds. I'm over 12 weeks according to the scan, so I know its possible to have heard it. Why didn't we get to hear the heartbeat? Is that normal practice until the 19 week scan? I hate the idea of having to wait until January before I can see or hear my baby again

As far as I am aware, you don't usually hear the heartbeat at scans...you hear it first at your 16 week midwife appointment then each time you see your midwife after that.

It may be different in your region...but no one i know who has been pregnant has heard the heart beat on scans. I really looked forward to my 16 week midwife appointment for this reason and it's a nice stop gap between the 12 week and 20 week scan. Congratulations that all was great from your scan. Exciting!

Yep, pretty standard not to hear it at scans. And here they don't use doppler at appointments until 24 weeks so it will just depend on what policy is in your NHS area.

BertramKibbler · 28/11/2018 06:54

We didn’t hear it at all with my first pregnancy. Some trusts don’t seem to do it.

Stephisaur · 28/11/2018 07:08

Haven’t heard it with any of my NHS scans. If they do turn the sound on, it’s only to check the cord flow.

I did hear it at a private scan, which was lovely, and also my MW checked it with the Doppler from 16 weeks :)

I didn't get to hear it until 22 weeks midwife appointment . They don't let you hear it at scans where I am.

Makes so much more sense! I need to get in touch with my midwife soon anyway, she's been off sick and I've not met her yet! I've had stand ins! Haha ill ask her about the doppler. Its all so exciting now 😀

I first heard mine at my 16 week midwife appointment- I asked her to try as it's not practice to try till your 24 week appointment.

I had a growth scan at the hospital last week at 28 weeks and she did do a Doppler scan so I did get to hear that, but again I don't think it's standard practice.

I have regular scans (fortnightly at the moment) throughout but to a health condition and have never heard the heartbeat during the scan. I’ve only ever heard it at midwife appointments with the Doppler.
