My friend is 17weeks pregnant and recently craved eating large amounts of salmon. Is there a limit to how much she should eat and is this craving a sign of a deficincy?

I don't know whether it's a sign of any deficiency, but acording to the bbc website:

"A weekly intake of two to four servings of fish from a variety of species with special emphasis on fatty fish with low mercury content, such as salmon and small oceanic fish, is consistent with current advice for reducing cardiovascular risk."

Is she craving more than 4 servings?

She said she ate £8 pounds worth in one day- and she desperately needed to find some!

Whoa, depending on the quality, that could be a lot of fish! Well, it's not high in mercury, so as long as it's not every day it shouldn't be a problwm, but she'd better ask her midwife. Everything in moderation and all that!

If it helps, my cravings changed and went (pineapple etc) over the weeks, she might "grow out of it" in a few weeks!

Thanks will pass that on. She is not sure it is worth contacting her midwife at this stage in her pregnancy. I said yes to just check things out- her next appoint is at 24 weeks (7 weeks time!)

She should be able to ring the community midwives for a chat. I think they suggest you get at least two servings of fish a week when pregnant, so it might be worth asking her if she can curb herself a tad until she's spoken to the midwife

The midwives don't mind questions at all, tell her not to worry about dropping in for a quick chat, it's not like one stage of pregnancy is more valid or important than another!

Isn't she having a 20 week scan by the way? 24 weeks seems a bit late for it. She could pop into antenatal after her scan to discuss any questions she has. I'm always bugging my midwives, I bet they dread seeing me waddling up with another question about supplements and braxton hicks lol
