Abdominal ultrasound at 5 weeks?

Had some pain today and midwife sent me to A&E. They tried to do a scan but as I had already given pee sample my bladder was too empty and they couldn't see anything. They want to make sure it's not ectopic so have said to go back tomorrow morning with a very full bladder, if pregnancy is in the right place I can go home but if it's not or if they can't see anything I have to stay in overnight.

I'm just a bit upset, they don't have any transvaginal ultrasound facilities at this hospital apparently so it has to be abdominal. But I've googled and read hundreds of comments and I'm not finding many people that have seen much, if anything, abdominally this early in the pregnancy? I'm 5 weeks at the absolute maximum.

I don't mind staying in it it's in an emergency, but I feel like I'm going to have to stay in just because they don't have suitable facilities to check a pregnancy this early. I'm dreading it.

HCG levels were 3000 which was pretty good.

That’s a very strange system! It’s very unlikely you will see anything at 5 weeks on an abdominal ultrasound! Can you ask to be referred to somewhere with a transvaginal option?

@Jeffacake I'm paying for a private scan transvaginally next week anyway. They tried to keep me in tonight and I had to argue that the pain has subsided and that it's too early for an abdominal scan. They said I can go tonight but tomorrow morning if they don't see anything I have to stay regardless. It just seems completely ridiculous

I’ve had a number of early abdominal scans, though not as early as 5 weeks, more like 6 - don’t know how much difference that makes. They were certainly able to detect a heartbeat.

I had an abdominal scan at 5+4 to rule out ectopic following a bleed. They were able to see the gestational sac and a yolk sac, and confirmed that it was in the right place. Hope all goes well for you.

This is a really personal question, but what is your weight like? I had an abdominal scan at 6 weeks with my first pregnancy and they couldn’t see anything but I was quite overweight at the time.

Second pregnancy I was considerably slimmer and an abdominal scan was really clear at 6+1 so weight can make a huge difference...
