Do the still check the heartbeat at the 16 week check up?

I’ve got my 16 week checkup on December 10th, I’ll actually be more like 15 weeks but my midwife is on holiday the week after.

When I was pregnant with DD 5/6 years ago, they checked her HB with the Doppler, it was the first time I’d ever heard it Smile

Have just been reading through some leaflets and it says that most trusts won’t do this anymore.

I’m going for another scan next week where I’ll be between 13-14 weeks Ecuador my uterus is tilted and the sonographer couldn’t get very good measurements of the baby.

We haven’t told anybody that we’re expecting yet and that includes parents. We’ll be telling SIL after next weeks scan as we live on a farm and I’m not allowed near pregnant ewes (and most of them are in the early stages of pregnancy right now)

I was hoping to tell parents and grandparents after we’d heard the HB at the 16 week check up. If not we’ll wait until 20 weeks.

I think it just varies by trust area. They don't check HB till 24 weeks in my area. I saw a post on here earlier today suggesting some don't check it at all any more.

TheSubtleKnifeAndFork · 22/11/2018 11:49

They do listen in at 16 weeks in my area, but it's true that they definitely don't do it everywhere anymore.

Mine was also 24 weeks and that was the first time they measured my bump too.

Domino45 · 22/11/2018 12:12

Hi, at my appointment the midwife at 16 wks she she wouldn’t check it as if there were any concerns/issues she couldn’t guarantee a scan could then be booked. At my 25 wk appointment I believe she will start to measure my bump. Not sure if they will listen to the heartbeat then.

Mumofboys95 · 22/11/2018 12:22

At my 16 week check in January mine didn't as she said that if they couldn't hear a heartbeat there would be nothing they could do till the 20 week scan and don't want to put unnecessary worry on expectant mums in case they can't hear a heartbeat

justfivemoreminuets · 22/11/2018 12:24

I had mine yesterday and they did.

Tinypause · 22/11/2018 12:24

In my trust we don't listen until after the 20 week scan. You could always ask if it's not routine, just be aware that they may say no!

Shazafied · 22/11/2018 12:25

25 weeks here (NE England)

Shazafied · 22/11/2018 12:25

^thats at the community MW appt. it also gets heard at 12w and 20w ukatrasound.

Jenniferlyndley · 22/11/2018 12:30

Mine checked the heartbeat at my 16 week appt but said it was unreliable at that stage and she wouldn't always be able to find it.

jaychops · 22/11/2018 12:41

They did at mine (NW England) and found it easily.

newrubylane · 22/11/2018 13:34

They did at mine (Glos), but she did do all the 'don't panic if we can't find it' spiel beforehand

Mewe · 22/11/2018 13:56

They didn’t check mine at 16weeks and said it was because they wouldn’t necessarily be able to find it accurately. They do check at 24 weeks here.

Merrz · 22/11/2018 14:02

My midwife didn't check HB at 16 weeks, she offered but said at that stage it wasn't guaranteed she's be able to find it and even if she did it might come and go so said she preferred not too because it just stresses people out if they don't find it.

PivotPivotPIVOTTT · 22/11/2018 14:02

I had mine listened to at 15+2

SoyDora · 22/11/2018 14:03

Not in my area.

Notquiteagandt · 22/11/2018 14:52

I never heard it at any scans. But could see it flickering away.

I heard it at every mw appointment from 16w.

16w listened for ages and was allowed to record it. But appointments since been like a quick 10 second listen.

AmyDowdensLeftLeftShoe · 22/11/2018 21:29

The heartbeat was heard at about 23 weeks due to reduced movements, and shown on my 12 and 20 week scans but not recorded on my notes until after 25 weeks. I had hospital midwife, community midwife and GP appointments as I was under consultant care.
