How much did you pay for NCT classes?

Hey girls. I'm trying to book antenatal classes at the moment and just got a quote from NCT for their Signature course and they are quoting me £333 for 4 sessions (16 hours)?! Does this seem high to you?

The Which website says that the course should be 18 hours and be £159 or £228 in London. We live in THE most deprived Borough of London so I cannot for the life of me work out why it's so expensive! It's more than £100 more than the listed London rate?!

The NHS courses at my hospital are already fully booked so I'm at a loss what to do. We absolutely can't afford that! And they only will reduce it if we're on benefits which we're not. I feel like we are being penalised for working :(

Has anyone here not gone to classes and fared ok? And if you did go, what did you pay and was it worth it?

We did the essentials course rather than the signature, I think it was about £175

Nightmanagerfan · 21/11/2018 17:35

We haven’t done them yet but have paid £320 for the signature course in London

PixieCutRegret · 21/11/2018 17:36

That does seem very steep OP. I can't believe they havent got enough places for people on the NHS course Shock any chance you can talk to your midwife to find any alternative classes?

RiskIt4Biscuit · 21/11/2018 17:48

Not NCT, but private course is £244.

It's an 18 hour couples course (over 6 different days - all but one are 2 hours and 15 minutes each, and one is from 9.30 to 4.30) with a 2 hour session with a trained breastfeeding counsellor, plus we apparently get a book at the end.

We missed the first one yesterday as I was stuck in hospital, but the teacher has been on the phone to my DH, and she seems really nice and helpful.
She has asked us to get there 30 minutes early next time to give us information we missed out on.

This is in a fairly nice town not too far from London.

I obviously can't tell you if it's any good yet.

What about your health visitors? We were invited to a 2 hour introduction which included some information about baby development, sleeping, changing a diaper and bathing, as well as feeding. If you're not able to find a course, then something like that might be better than nothing?

Blazeisamonster · 21/11/2018 17:49

I never went to a course all kids are live and well we are at year number 6 now so. 🤞

RiskIt4Biscuit · 21/11/2018 17:51

I forgot to add, I got the leaflet for the private course from my midwife, but when I called the health visitors, they also recommended the course - so maybe your local health visitor team and your community midwife will know of other available courses?

We’ve just paid £260 for the signature course in Kent. Worth checking out other options, out hospital run a hypnobirthing birth prep course with midwives for £100 and other hypnobirth providers will do courses cheaper than £330!

SnowmanOfthegingerbreadhouse · 21/11/2018 18:52

£17.50 as they do discounts for couples under certain income and other criteria

ChaosMoon · 21/11/2018 19:07

We just paid £220 for baby and bump. 5x 2hr classes and an afternoon tea. (We're in London too.)

There are various other classes around too, so you may find some non-NCT ones in your area. (Doctor and Daughter look like another good option.) And if not full ante-natal classes, you might be able to find Hypnobirthing classes that are helpful. Good luck with it.

Hi, I booked onto NCT classes for £190.00 for 16.5 hours. We’re in the West Midlands. Our neighbour across the road also paid the same when they took the classes. Didn’t realise the costs seem to vary until this thread.

PickettBowtruckles · 21/11/2018 19:54

Almost £300 as well for the signature course, 6 sessions lasting 2hrs 15mins each. We’re in the South-East.

SpottingTheZebras · 21/11/2018 19:56

I think the website is out of date and quoting the shorter Essentials course rather than the Signature one.

The course is really expensive but we did the Signature one and in terms of the people we met, it has been one of the best things I’ve spent money on.

BendingSpoons · 21/11/2018 19:58

Over £300 in London sadly. It's annoying how much more expensive London is. I know people who didn't do any and it's fine!

problembottom · 21/11/2018 20:10

Starting my Signature course on Saturday. £198 in Manchester.
