Tomorrow (when I am 31+4 weeks) I am meeting my health visitor in the morning and I was wondering for this first visit what she will actually do? Coming to my house.

I'm a bit scared if I am honest!

Does everyone have a HV home visit booked? I am nearly 31 weeks and have had about a billion antenatal appointments but nobody has mentioned anything about a health visitor. Do some areas not have them?

I think they just come round to scope out the place... I would be manically cleaning and tidying Grin but in all honestly I think they just come to check there aren't any safeguarding issues and to ensure you are well supported.

Wellm I did manage to find this online which says they come at about 28 weeks!

I'm on my 3rd pregnancy- never had a HV come to my house 🤔

We go to them but yes have a HV meeting before birth. I liked it tbh! She talked through my feeding preferences and where to go for support, asked if I had any questions about sleeping arrangements or anything else. Just introduced herself and signposted places to go for help.

Mine asked a few questions about me and now my dh like where we work, so we have support around, talked to me about safe sleeping, how to feed, different ante natal groups etc and then left. Was there about 20 mins

I got a call yesterday from a lady saying she was a health visitor and was I working, did it suit me to have a visit thuraday morning.

She was very nice and explained that she might not be on time due to the nature of the job (people might have lots of Q and take more time) and was that okay.

Also said she would have someone with her (assuming due to protection) and then I got a text with her office number and that she was looking forward to meeting me.

I saw mine around 37 weeks. She came in and asked a few questions about mine/DHs health, she asked if we needed anything, how we was feeding and if we needed any support. She didn't leave my living room just sat on the chair with my dog for 45mins talking.

It's area dependent. My old area only did post birth visits once you were discharged from the midwives, this area does pre-birth visits. They basically introduce themselves and ensure baby has somewhere safe to sleep and you seem to be preparing for their arrival.

Also said she would have someone with her (assuming due to protection) possibly a student HV, it is nursing placement time.

I think pre birth visits are a really recent initiative being rolled out.

It's nothing to worry about it's just a load of form filling and information giving about services etc I think they found people weren't really taking it all in immediately after giving birth (not surprising)

The person with her will most likely be a student

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 21/11/2018 17:24

I've got four kids and only had an appointment to come out pre- birth with my last child. I couldn't do that date so I phoned up and they said they would rearrange, but they never did and was never mentioned again. It's a new thing, it's nothing to worry about.

SlightDark · 22/11/2018 12:09

Well I must say I love my HV she was so sweet and we went through some stuff I didn't expect to which was nice. So not scary at all.

And it seems like there is more support than I thought available for things. Maybe my area is good I hear awful things on here sometimes
