Past week I've been feeling movements that feel like muscle spasms in my lower belly mostly at night. Is it too early for my first?

In my experience its highly unlikely at 13 weeks. Early movements feel more like a fluttery feeling, so it sounds like muscle spasms are probably just that - muscles stretching and things starting to expand.

You know your own body though, and I'm sure there will be someone along in a minute who swears they felt movements that early. I'm pregnant for the second time and both times haven'f felt movement until at least 20 weeks.

This is going to sound really odd, but when I did start to feel movements, I was very aware that it was "someone else" in there. I could just tell it wasn't coming from my body as such.....

I was very aware that it was "someone else" in there ----> this! Definitely true and it's a strange feeling. You just know it's the baby! I didn't feel movement until 17+6 although looking back it may have started slight earlier. The first movements felt like little pops and like a fish moving its tail. You could be feeling your baby at 13 weeks- however it could also be muscles stretching as your uterus expands. I had a colleague who gave birth recently who swore she could feel baby from 12 weeks. Worth remembering that the baby is still really small at 13 weeks (about the size of a lemon) so its legs and arms are going to be tiny.

I did feel kicks with my second baby at 13 weeks. At 14 weeks could even feel it from the outside. I was very slim though, which I’m sure was a factor.
