So I’m currently taking microgynon, have been for over 3 years now and never had any problems up until now. I understand that everyone knows their own body, something felt strange, I felt flutters and bubbling as though I was about 20 weeks pregnant. So to put my mind at ease, I took a cheap hpt and it came back positive with a faint line but showed up straight away. They have followed with about 5 negative tests bar one which I can just about see a line but I feel like my mind is playing tricks on me! I’m also 8 days before my withdrawal bleed is due so I don’t understand what’s happening! 🤔

I don’t know what to suggest Hun. Other then book a doctors appt to get a blood test maybe. They’ll be able to check your HCG levels.
Can you post pictures of your tests?

False positives are very rare , false negatives aren't. If your positives were faint it could be that you're very early on, hence the other tests being negative. You'll have a low level of HCG presents. That being said, there are Evap lines which can be mistaken for positives when they're not. Did the lines have colour in them? Were they blue or pink dye tests? Blue dye tests are more notorious for evaps that look like positives.

One of the most reliable test brands is First Response. Take one with first morning urine. Also second PP, go to the doctors and explain the situation. If you've had 2 faint positives they will likely test themselves or possibly do a blood test.

Whatever happens, good luck Smile

It's very rare (no matter how faint the line) to get a false positive - with my first I tested negative 6 times (was sure i was pregnant!) Until i went I finally went to a family planning unit where they tested and scanned me and told me I was 12 weeks- when I asked them why I was testing negative they just said low hcg levels, then within a week full blown morning sickness....one extreme to the next-x

(Sorry OP did just notice the 'help' at the end of that- and also sending a good luck whatever happens x)

If you are potentially quite far along, to the extent you could be feeling movement, I've seen people recommend diluting your urine with water before testing. I believe once your HCG is past a certain point the test actually stops detecting it? No personal experience, I just see it here on MN a lot. It might be worth giving it a go.

i dont know how to post pictures on here. ive been having my periods each month as normal and have done pregnancy tests in previous months because its something im cautious of and never once has anything come back with a faint positive. i just dont understand why im getting nothing but negatives now

If you've been having periods as normal then it's highly likely that if you are pregnant, you have conceived this cycle. If that's the case, it would make sense as to why your positives are faint and you're still getting some negatives. The tests measure the HCG in your urine. The more pregnant you are, the higher your HCG and so the more likely you are to show a positive/stronger positive.

Either that or you have had 2 evap lines and aren't pregnant. Grab a First Response test and test on the day your period is due as thats better than testing early.

Thanks so much for the advice! Is this still likely to be the case even though I’ve been on the pill?

OP hasn’t been having periods, she’s been having withdrawal bleeds from the hormones in the pill which is not the same thing.

I think in this case I’d advise making a GP appointment for further advice - it might be worth a blood test just to be sure.

Sophie97 · 19/11/2018 14:10

I went to visit gp today, I was told there’s no such thing as false positive but she doesn’t think I’m pregnant which I’m struggling to understand since I’ve had a positive test. I’m going to wait a week or so and test again!

Even on the pill with not having periods but withdrawal bleeds you shouldn't be getting a false positive. I'd make an appointment at your surgery for a blood test to confirm or rule out pregnancy. You can test again at home in the meantime but I'd give it a couple of days Smile

You can't post pictures as a new member but can after a few days so hopefully if you have any questions about the test you'll be able to upload the photo and ask for advice. That way, if there is a second like you might get more insight as to whether it looks positive or like an evap line.

Good luck and I hope everything is okay with you x

Thanks for all the help
I’ve bled a little today, was light brown/pinkish colour and stop almost straight away. I have considered it being implantation bleeding but is it even possible to get a possible result before implantation? Or is this just the start of my period?!

If you test every month, just out of caution, is it possible you've become a bit over sensitive to normal body sensations and you're a bit anxious about it?

If you've had clear tests in previous cycles, then you can only be only-just pregnant if you are, so nothing to worry about (i.e. you won't be 20 weeks!) because you can test again in a week or two if you need to.

The most likely explanation is that you are not pregnant, and your period is due to start.

Cleojinx · 20/11/2018 18:52

It wouldn't be implantation bleeding if you were already showing a positive but spotting can be a common first trimester symptom. Either that or it will become your period! Alternatively, if you've had positive tests it could be a chemical pregnancy which is when the pregnancy fails around the time a period is due. To get 2 false positives would be very very odd but I don't know much about how the pill could affect that if at all!

Would your withdrawal bleed be due around now? If so I'd grab a First Response test and test again. They have a good reputation.

It's awful when you don't know what's going on with your body!
