Knickers

Dd, 17, is now 18 weeks. She’s only just starting to show so can still fit into her regular knickers at the moment. Well probably get away with just going up a size until late pregnancy.
However...will she need maternity knickers for the last couple of months? I see Mothercare do both under the bump ones which look like regular knickers and over the bump ones.
And for after the birth...do people get big knickers that come up high in case they end up with a caesarean? Maternity ones or regular?
And are disposable knickers any good or are they’d just scratchy and horrible, in which case we’d be better with cheapies from primark which can be binned if necessary?
Sorry if these are silly questions. I adopted so have never given birth.

I always just bought big high wasted granny pants a couple of sizes up. Saw me through pregnancy and post c-section.

twoheaped · 17/11/2018 15:27

I think it's personal preference as to whether under or over bump are comfortable.
Personally, I couldn't stand under bump, they irritated me.
I would wait and see which she would prefer as she gets bigger and just buy cheap ones.

Polly99 · 17/11/2018 15:28

I wore my normal pants right through pregnancy.

It is good to have some big pants for after the birth, both in case of a c section and to hold the enormous pads in place. I swelled up like a walrus after my sections so my DH bought me a few pairs of size 18 granny knickers from M&S (the ones that come up really high). I’m usually a size 10-12 and they did the trick for the first couple of weeks until I was healed enough for normal pants again.

Stephisaur · 17/11/2018 15:54

I’ve just sized up my regular knickers.

The high leg ones have been good for me - sit under bump but good bum coverage and comfy around the top of my thighs.

They don’t need to be expensive, I get the multi packs from Asda :)

I just wore my normal knickers all through last time and it was fine, wore them after too. Plan to do the same again this time.

Anyat212 · 17/11/2018 16:51

I haven’t bought any maternity knickers and I’m 19 weeks - I’m just starting to show too! They seem expensive for just one pair I’ve bought some cheap cotton ones from Primark in bigger sizes (I’m usually a 10 but they only had medium and large in there for me) and they feel much more comfortable than my usual knickers.

If your daughter is open to the maternity knickers - new look has them on offer for £3 per pair. I’m not sure what sizes but I’ve bought some mat clothes today and seen their website Smile

SoyDora · 17/11/2018 16:54

I’m on my third pregnancy and have never bought maternity knickers, or sized up! Just worn my normal ones.

Nothisispatrick · 17/11/2018 16:55

I wore my normal knickers throughout pregnancy, then bought some comfy cotton knickers one size up for after birth

biggreenfingers · 17/11/2018 16:58

I just wore my normal underwear (usually a thong) right until I gave birth. After birth I wore "granny" pants from primark until I was comfy/the bleeding stopped and I went back to my usual.

biggreenfingers · 17/11/2018 16:59

Sorry @Nothisispatrick I've literally just copied what you said 😂

NerrSnerr · 17/11/2018 17:00

I just wore my normal knickers all the way through and then granny pants from Tesco for afterwards.

Notquiteagandt · 17/11/2018 17:05

Im 27w and feeling rather large (all bump so she has no where to grow but out!) And have a very low bump.

A friend reccomended primarks seemless stretchy shorts. Pack of 3 for about 6quid.

They are so so so comfy and stretchy. Im usually a size 6 so went for a size 14. No irritating seems or anything.

Id reccomend them to anyone. So comfy!!

Notquiteagandt · 17/11/2018 17:06

Also you sound like a lovely mum Flowers

Autumndays14 · 17/11/2018 17:11

I wore my normal style pants - sensible high leg briefs! - which are a comfy style but had to get a bigger size. In general I preferred under the bump clothing but that's just personal preference. The thing that it's worth spending money on is maternity bras. I wore wireless nursing bras throughout pregnancy and wear them nearly a year later. They are pricy but worth it as so comfortable and I wear them 24 hours a day!

biggreenfingers · 17/11/2018 17:12

I second that @Notquiteagandt

CrazyOldBagLady · 17/11/2018 17:16

My knickers were the only thing that still fit me through pregnancy. Like others I bought massive granny pants for after the birth to contain sanitary pads and chucked them out once I stopped bleeding.

Papergirl1968 · 17/11/2018 17:50

Aww, thank you everyone.
She wears very tiny thongs, and laughs her head off at my huge, comfy granny pants.
I will have a mooch around Primark and check out those New Look maternity knickers too.
Bought her a load of maternity clothes including bras from H&M a couple of weeks ago but so far she’s only worn the over the bump jeans.

Through three pregnancies, I have always just worn my regular knickers (brief style).

Spanglyprincess1 · 17/11/2018 18:27

I wore under the bump but only for last few weeks - prior to that normal pants! Did dropped and was hiddeous to wear any pants on my bump hence change

Darkstar4855 · 17/11/2018 18:44

I wore my normal ones (bikini style) up until about 34 weeks but then the front started rolling down under my bump which was irritating. After that I bought some Sainsbury’s midi briefs (big pants) in a size larger that come up over my bump and they are so comfy I wish I’d done it sooner!

Post-natally I’ve got the big pants in a size bigger and some more in my usual size plus several packs of maternity pads. I’ve heard that the disposable ones aren’t much good for the price so I’m going with the Sainsbury’s ones instead and will chuck them out once the bleeding settles.

user4041 · 17/11/2018 18:47

I stopped wearing knickers torwards the end as I was so uncomfortable but in the middle stages I wore girl boxer shorts as they went right over the bump to the middle and around the back so comfy

ChikiTIKI · 17/11/2018 18:49

I had some knickers in my regular size from M&S which were lace at the front. I just wore those, I had quite a few pairs. As it was stretchy lace and not a thin band of elastic, it didn't dig in to my belly and was comfortable. Any supermarket will sell full briefs that would be great for after birth. I am usually a size 10 and got some size 14 pairs which were perfect.

RachelYC · 18/11/2018 13:26

OP thank you so much for asking! I have been wondering this myself! At the moment I am 22 weeks and wearing my normal pants under my bump, but I wear tights most days for work and it feels like the whole kit and caboodle is falling down all the time Grin I was a bit too embarrassed to ask anyone though!

You sound like a lovely mum, and your daughter is lucky to have you! My mum died 6 years ago and I wish everyday she was here to share this (and to help with the silly questions haha) x

Papergirl1968 · 18/11/2018 17:47

Thanks, Rachel, I’m sorry to hear that. My dm is 85 and I feel so grateful to still have her.
This shopping lark is a minefield, and I’m discovering we are tempted by all sorts of lovely things we don’t actually need! So if we can save a few ££ on not buying expensive knickers, we can splash out in something else.
Thank you all for your help.
