Is it safe? Or does it fall into the mattress category? I'm unsure as to whether we even need one but been offered to buy a second hand one (via a friend of a friend).

We had one for our first, he was teeny tiny and it helped with the transition from the SCBU where he had a makeshift one. We used it until he learnt to roll over in the end. Obviously the lullaby trust doesn't approve of them at all, but the company says secondhand is fine because you can wash it completely. The cover comes off, and the padding is removable and washes in a machine.

Whether you 'need' one is up to you. If you've got a reasonable sized baby you won't get masses of use out of it as they'll grow out of it, and you also have to deal with the transition when you eventually take it away, our son was not amused when we removed it.
