Extreme, unquenchable thirst (not diabetes)

Pretty much since the start of my pregnancy (now 6.5 months in), I've been really, really thirsty - I mean, drinking up to 8 litres of water in 24 hours. I live in a hot country and in summer I assumed it was that, and that in any case, the more water, the better. But now it's cold I still have the same need, which feels like an addiction. Sometimes I really enjoy the water and feel it quenches my thirst, but other times the hit is just while it's in my mouth and I'm thirsty again right afterwards, with a horrible, sweetish taste in my mouth. I have gestational diabetes, but it's very mild and completely under control through diet. I eat really healthily and frequently (although a bit less now with the heartburn!) and there don't seem to be any other obvious factors that would make me so thirsty.

I've spoken to a couple of doctors about it and they just tell me - unreaslistically - to cut down to 2-3 litres a day, which would be torture. I feel out on a limb and very frustrated. I've been wondering about trying electrolytes to replace diluted salts, but the pharmacist and a nurse friend both warned me they might contain too many salts.

Anyone else been through anything like this? Any weird cause I may not have thought of?

Probably a side effects of the GD and the pregnancy in general. Are you constantly on the loo? I would worry that any rehydration supplements will mess with your blood sugars.
Your kidneys can manage to process about 20 litres a day so I wouldn't worry too much.
