Time Off for Father During Labour

Hey,
I've been reading that paternity leave in the UK can start from the day the baby is born, but what do fathers need to claim to be there during labour? If the labour is 3 days do they take this as holiday or unpaid leave? Any advice or examples would be much appreciated.
Thanks!!

I guess it depends how reasonable (or not!) their employer is! My labour started on the Friday and my son was born on Sunday. DH’s paternity leave started from the following Monday - when I was in labour (so Friday morning) he just called his boss and said the baby was coming and he wouldn’t be coming in! It would be exceptionally petty to expect him to take that as holiday....

Dh started his paternity leave the day I went into labour. I would guess this is the case in most workplaces, but worth asking.

Brill - thanks. I agree - hopefully his work will be supportive not obstructive!!
