Hey mamas,

I'm 9 weeks pregnant, according to the midwife calculations, I've had my appointments, bloods taken, just waiting on blood results and letter grim the hospital for my scan between week 11 and 13...

My question is... How can I only be 9 weeks, yet my belly has literally bloated double in size?! Its terrifying... I've weighed myself several times since the positive test (I have weight issues, and I'm extremely self conscious about them...), I've put on like 2lbs in the last month or so (I'm 95.1kg). I also have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) so I'm well aware of how and why I may bloat and what foods may trigger that.
The rest of my body has stayed relatively the same, I'm still getting nausea symtoms, I've tested positive for a bladder infection but I've had those for years, they've never made me bloat. Just a little pizzled since its my first baby...

Bloat is super common in the first trimester. It's made more common with bowel issues (even if those are normally under control). Your weight gain is fine.

Very normal in pregnancy. I’m also 9 weeks and I’ve been googling this morning about why I’m NOT bloatedBlush

@Jellybean100 everyone's different, some people don't really show till the end of the second trimester, unfortunately over the next few weeks your body is going to chance drastically, your making room for a baby and if gaining 2lbs when your pregnant is really effecting you then maybe you need to see a midwife councillor through your pregnancy just to help you understand the changes your body is making to allow your baby to grow x

I'm 8+6 and my stomach is definitely bloated but no weight gain so far. It's very bizarre!

@namechange9681 you tagged me instead of OP X

Is this your first pregnancy OP?Because if it is, prepare for your body to do a whole host of odd thing that you will be very puzzled at 😂

Most frustrating for my first pg was sickness, constipation, bloating, chin hairs (what was that about?), weight gain, water retention, swelling feet, foot cramps, restless leg syndrome, being uncomfortable especially towards the last 3 months, feeling like my vagina was about to fall out (again, very last 2 months)

And no sodding pregnancy glow 🤨

Anyway, I spent a large part of my pregnancy complaining about what was happening and really resisting it. I'd lost 30lbs the previous year and was very conscious of my weight and not going back to that horrible depressed state where I was overweight. So being the size of a small house was hard to adjust to. I get where you are coming from!

The best advice I can give you here is:

It's normal. You will put on (on average) between 25 - 35lbs over 40 weeks. That's basically 1lb a week.

Everyone is different and will experience pregnancy in a whole myriad of ways.

Above all, embrace this time. Try to as much as you can anyway. You are doing the most amazing and beautiful thing (god, tearing up as I write this because I'm pg too). Embrace the maternity clothes, embrace your wonderful body and what it's doing. I certainly plan to 2nd time round.

I put on half a stone and look 6 months gone 😂
12 weeks...

Smurfybubbles · 06/11/2018 09:34

Totally normal! I bloated very early too it should settle down in the second trimester and then gradually your bump will pop out I took a photo a week in my undies to track my bump and looking back when I thought I was huge I wasn't, the photos from week 40 were hilarious I looked like I had swallowed a beachball!

Darkstar4855 · 06/11/2018 10:41

I had loads of bloating in the first trimester - it’s the hormones affecting the gut! Totally normal. It settled down later on. A gain of 2lb at nine weeks sounds pretty normal too.

Thank you ladies!!!! Feeling so so much better already! My midwife isn't available until Fridays, and my GP is sick of my face hahaha i really am enjoying being able to rub my belly and imagine a little being in there, even if its only the size of a raspberry right now haha I'm wearing leggings and t shirts for comfort as I can't afford new maternity clothes yet, but seeing my sisters reaction to my belly last night, its made me a little more excited about my scan!! Ill keep an eye on the progress, and keep it in the back of my mind that my body is a freaking miracle worker! Hehe
