My ex p's (ds1's dad) lovely girlfriend is 13 wks pregnant and started bleeding last week, went for check adn scan and was told she has bicornuate uterus and that baby is healthy and developing fine, but she is menstruating from other side?

Am asking for some stories as she has been told 2nd trimester stillbirths/miscarriage are more likely and that she is to be scanned every 2 weeks
She is frightened beyond belief.
Any god stories or knwoledge of somewhere I could point her to without her panicing further?
TIA piff

piffle, don't know if this is any help but I have a bicornuate uterus, had an utterly uneventful pregnency and delivered ds (8lb3oz) at 41 weeks, naturally. I was terrified too because I'd been told there is a higher risk of miscarriage and of premature birth as the uterus doesn't stretch in the same way as normal. But can only repeat that I had a perfectly normal pg and perfectly normal birth, so it's not a sure thing that you will have problems. Really hope she is getting lots of support - you're lovely to post on her behalf.

Hi, I have a bi-cornuate uterus - pretty much totally separated in two. I've had 3 miscarriages - but all around 6 weeks and not supposedly related to my uterus (as all the consultants kept telling me that it is more likely to occur 2nd trimester). In this pregnancy I had bleeding between about 6 and 10 weeks on and off which was apparently the other side of my uterus shedding its lining. I have had scans every 2 weeks and are now at 21 weeks without any complications so far - fingers crossed. The scans every 2 weeks are to measure the length of her cervix to check that it isn't shortening which can be a predictor of pre-term labour. If it does shorten before about 24weeks, then they can put a stitch in it to keep it closed. The first scan with my consultant at 15weeks showed that my cervix was fine and he said that majority of cases would show shortening by that point if it was going to.
I hope that everything goes well with your friend. I thought I would be totally stressed with this pregnancy as it was only during my last miscarriage that my uterus was diagnosed, but I have had some acupuncture which has really helped and I have actually been relatively relaxed!! (The regular scans have really helped and the fact that I can feel my little one moving around now - although quite weird as the baby is on my left side rather than in the middle).
I've got my 20 week anomaly scan tomorrow so hoping all goes well, but can't wait to see my little wiggle again.

I have one. I lost a twin from the smaller side of my womb when 9 weeks with Dd1. I then continued to bleed up until about 16 weeks i think, but other than that the pregnancy was fine. Dd was transverse all the way through the pregnancy though as there is less room for baby to move around.

The main problem it caused with Dd2 was that I went into prem labour and she was born at 34 weeks, (again breech) but she was fine after 2 weeks in scbu (slow to feed).

With Ds it caused no problems at all tbh, other than that he was also breech.

Originally i was told it can be hard to concieve, but I have never found that LOL.

Hope all goes well for her.

There's a yahoo group for women who have this and other related conditions (known as Mullerian anomalies) You can find it here
