DS told me there's a baby in my belly this morning

He's 3 and he's right, I'm 6 weeks. It's high risk though so I didn't want to tell him until 12 weeks. Luckily Dh was there and gasped "there's a baby in my belly?" which turned it into a joke with DS laughing.

I didn't know what to say, I just didn't want to tell him yet because of the risk but I also don't want to lie to him. Has anyone got any advice on what to say if he mentions it again?

Could he have overheard you and DP talking about it perhaps? Very weird intuition if not.

RandomMess · 03/11/2018 09:34

He's 3 he has very little concept of time! Stop stressing.

I'd just say mildly "oh that's interesting DS, why do you say that?" then respond with "OK". He's 3, he probably won't push you.

He's either heard something or just being a 3 year old who knows babies come from his Mum - because he did after all - and extrapolating into fact. I don't think it's weird intuition. Plenty of 3 year olds say it. Some are going to be right.

No right or wrong way to handle it. Could carry on making a joke of it. Could turn it around to stories of when he was in there. Could distract.

Congratulations.

Thank you. I suppose distraction is the best option, we do ot with plenty of other things. He just really threw me this morning. We probably do need to be a bit more careful with what we say infront of him too, he's surprised us in the past with what he's picked up on.

DD did that to me at about 10 week's when she was 4. She had a nursery worker who was pregnant too and I think she just put two and two together. When he's older you can tell him how clever he was!

I think little ones often know!

Mine are 8 & 5, 8YO hasn’t cottoned on but 5YO put her head under my jumper a couple of days ago and said ‘oohhh, you’ve got a baby in there mummy.’

I’m 10 weeks today and this follows two consequtive M/C so I doubt I’ll even tell DC’s after the 12 week scan.

It came up again on the way home last night. He asked me directly this time if I had a baby in my belly. I took the advice on here and started telling him about when he was a baby in there.
