dreaded brown discharge

hi all.

Just to chat really. I think it is relevant in my case to immediately note it is definitely not eptopic as I have had 3 scans - each showed growth. however I am still having this brown discharge as I wipe. I am 8 weeks+3 today. Last scan was last Friday at 7 weeks+3. I know I should of stayed away from google but it's harfd when your mind is occupied with nothing else. I had a red gush last Tuesday but as I said I had a scan on the Friday which showed baby and a heartbeat. I guess I am just concerned at the ongoing brown discharge although I guess it could be leftover blood from the burst blood vessel that caused last Tuesdays gush. I am just confused if I should still fear miscarriage (I know can never guarantee in any pregnancy with or without strange discharge) but a lot of the stories I see it's they have eventually started red as in the discharge although it started as brown did progress to a red flow at some point - also they did not have heartbeats detected. Do you think it is just excess old blood still coming out or should I still be so fearful even after scan with heartbeat?

Thanks in advance for any responses - I don't think I can keep going for scans at this point either as I will have to be paying for them as the hospital does not seem concerned as it has been ongoing and I need to wait until dating scan now :(

Normally, following my own bad experience I think its wrong to give false assurance. However, if you've had red blood, brown discharge sounds like the remnants of that coming out as old blood. I'm sorry you have to wait until your dating scan for full reassurance though. Best of luck. xx

Unfortunately the hospital will not keep scanning you for mild bleeding/spotting as they have limited appointments and there is nothing they can do to prevent a miscarriage and they have already ruled out an ectopic pregnancy.

I know how hard it is because I was in the same situation - scan at 5+6 ruled out ectopic but I kept having intermittent small amounts of red blood and cramps followed by brownish spotting and was so worried about miscarriage. In the end we booked a private scan at 9 weeks and then it wasn’t as long to wait until my dating scan at 13 weeks. Everything turned out fine.

Honestly nobody can say for sure whether you will miscarry but if all was well at 7+3 on scan then the odds of miscarriage are reduced. Fingers crossed for you that everything turns out ok Flowers

I can’t give any advice but I just wanted to say that I’m having this too and it’s horrible isnt it! Almost the exact same week as you as well (think I’m 8+5?). 12 week scan can’t come quick enough!

Hope it works out okay for both of us Flowers

thanks - also makes me nervous as the baby was measuring quite small for my period dates - 4/6 days behind what I thought but again I know that can be quite common. such a stressful time, have booked a private scan for next week as it's my birthday next weekend too and I really don't think I'll be able to just forget about it. I want to make sure there is still a heartbeat and to see if it's growing at a steady rate - atleast I'll have something to compare it to and be reassured it's growing properly even if it is still 4/6 days behind. sorry to hear hopefulbride it really is such a horrible time but I've heard positive stories of bleeding and spotting and also negative of people that have no idea so I guess until scans we will just have try to stay positive! ❤

I know every pregnancy is different and I don't want to blindly reassure...but wanted to pop on to say I had bleeds at 8 weeks and 13 weeks similar to how you've described it and all ended up fine.

Hopex3 · 02/11/2018 20:28

thank you...I'm trying to not get too worried. it's really very light if I wasn't wiping I don't think i would even notice - has never touched a pad or my underwear apart from of course the burst blood vessel of last week. I'm glad i have a scan on Tuesday...not sure I could wait another 3 plus weeks for dating scan 😯

Really hope all works out well, I remember it being a terribly worrying time

I had streaked discharge and muddy brown discharge throughout both pregnancies. Just my experience. 2 healthy girls here x

Hi,

I feel like I could have written your post!

With my son, I had a little bit of brown discharge after wiping, had an early scan with him and everything was fine. Got to the 12 week scan and all was good as well!

This time round, I've had three episodes of brown discharge (twice just when wiping, and once was a gush of it). Have had two NHS scans already, because we're in a bit of a funny situation what with being in between two hospitals and NHS areas, one hospital saw me first but wouldn't see me second time but my midwife insisted so I went to the other one. Had the scan on Thursday past and everything was fine, baby measured bang on 10 weeks and all was good.

I had a speculum exam and they said I've got cervical ectropion, which sounds awful but is just some delicate cells on the cervix that can bleed a bit if irritated. They seem to think that's what is causing it.

I think like you say you can never guarantee it, but just wanted to let you know I had the same thing and everything was fine over here. It used to really frustrate me when people would say "stop worrying, it'll be fine" as though that would help!

MrsC01 · 03/11/2018 07:32

Also, at the first NHS scan this baby was measuring 5 days behind, and then was bang on at the second!

LittleMouseontheDairy · 03/11/2018 07:59

I had the same experience as MrsC01. I had a small patch of brown in my knickers on Thursday, I’m 16 weeks today but as I was 15 + 6 yesterday I was sent to the EPU at my local hospital. They found the hb and a speculum exam showed an ectropian on my cervix.

It might be relevant that it’s happened in both previous pregnancies but I’d had it earlier than this - and with my first I’d had quite a bit more. This was attributed to a subchorionic haematoma (sorry if spelt wrong). It sounds crazy but I can’t quite remember if it was confirmed that I’d had an ectropian before although I suspected it because I also got spotting before my period - usually after a bowel movement. (I think they are linked to hormonal changes - eg period/ pregnancy) and a BM or sex can irritate the cells, causing bleeding. (Both previous pregnancies were fine by the way!)

As you probably know, brown bleeding is considered less of a worry. Good luck! Also in my previous pg my dates were out by over a week when scanned early on but he caught up!

Hopex3 · 03/11/2018 08:55

thank you for your responses - it does seem to be more common then perhaps I realise. my midwife does not seem concerned either as there was correct growth between the 6 weeks and 7+2/3 scan. I'm trying to stay positive. hettiebettie that is exactly the right term - it is muddy looking! thanks all x
