What do they check for at 36 week scan?

I have 36 week scan tomorrow. Was just wondering what they check for and what to expect etc? I hope they don't start telling me baby is too big and putting pressure on me for early inductions/ c sections. I'm pretty sure these scan are not entirely accurate

Is there a reason you are having one as they aren’t standard (in UK). Any health conditions? I had to have scans every two weeks due to concerns about his size (massive) they just measured and that was all.

Every two weeks towards end btw not throughout!

In some hospitals they do the 36 week scan as standard. Where before it was just 12 & 20 week they now do 36 too. This isnt the case yet for all hospitals though which will be where the confusion comes from. X

Growth, placenta location, breech, placental function. If your hospital doesn’t do 34 or 36 week as standard (some now do) then there is usually a reason such as suspected big or small growth of baby, or concerns over placenta or lie of baby (breech, transverse etc). Maybe have a look in your notes & see if it says reason for scan?

If it is a standard scan, which many hospitals do now, it will be to check the baby’s position and confirm head down or discuss an ELCS if breech/transverse. Otherwise they tend to check the size, weight and placenta position/function.

I was told that it's routine now at my hospital to do 35/36 week scan. Odd how it isn't routine throughout the UK and just some hospitals?

I had one at 34 weeks, wasn't routine as was to check on my placenta but they did pretty much everything they did at 20 weeks and she also turned on the 3d sonography so I could see my baby's face 😀

I’m on my third pregnancy and never had a 36 week scan!
I imagine they check the placenta, positioning, size of baby etc.

Alanares89 · 30/10/2018 16:52

Rather jealous that you get a 36 week scan! Lol I only got the standard 12 week and 20 week! One Last wee look in before your baby comes, hope all goes well Flowers x

From what I can gauge 34/35/36 week scans seem to be a thing at teaching hospitals ie UCLH in London, anywhere that’s a “University Hospital” really.

When I had mine it was checking placental blood flow and getting an estimate of the babies size.
