When should I start monitoring movements?

Hi all. I’m 19+3 weeks with first baby and for around two weeks I’ve started to feel flutters, at first I thought it could have been gas bubbles but it became that frequent and a real strange sensation that I’m very sure it was baby! Over the last 5 days or so the flutters became very frequent and more noticeable if briefly lying flat or in the bath. Anyway for over a day now I have felt nothing at all and I’m starting to get a bit worried. I had a bath last night and still felt nothing. My 20 week scan is this week so hopefully that’ll put my mind at rest. When should lack of movements become a concern? I’m assuming it’s too early at the moment to have regular movements and I’m hoping a quiet day at this stage is normal. When did your movements become regular and should I be calling someone? Thanks.

I was told by 24 weeks, but some people are told from 28 weeks.

At the moment, baby can still hide from you so I wouldn’t worry too much just yet. HOWEVER, if you are concerned you can always call your hospital or midwife and they should be able to reassure you xx

I asked my midwife this on Wednesday. I have also regularly felt baby moving but then nothing at all for almost a week. She said you won’t get any set pattern of movement until at least 24 weeks. Like PP said, there is still room to hide, so midwife didn’t seem concerned.

However, ring them if you are worried!! Good luck for 20 week scan xxx

As above, 24 weeks. At less than this the baby is so small that they can change position so you can’t feel them!

With my first pregnancy I never had any set pattern of movements. It all made me a bit stressed as the midwives never really believed me but I tried really hard to record movements and there was never any set pattern.

I could have written this! I'm 19+4, have been feeling baby for definite since 18 weeks, and then felt nothing last night when I lay down to go to sleep. However, I've just felt it wriggling away again in the last hour, so I assume it was just tucked away somewhere that I couldn't feel it. My midwife said to look for a pattern of movement from 24 weeks. But as PP have said, if you are concerned, give your midwife a quick call. Best of luck with your scan next week!

Thanks all. I’ll try not to worry and hopefully all will be ok at the 20 week scan. Xxx

Im 24 weeks... hes regular as ever during the morning and night...during the day he gives me the odd bash to let me know he is there

If i am in work all day (i do 12 hour days) hes very quiet as im constantly on my feet - soon as im home and sitting he will kick me and have a party.

Also driving , he goes mad on certain songs depending on how loud the music is...

so to me i have a decent pattern already (from approx 22 weeks)

everyone is different :)

Hi, I was told from 28 weeks. Before this and baby’s movements are erratic. I’m now 29 weeks and would say I’m only now really noticing a pattern in movements.
