Baby not moving during scan

Hi all,

I'm currently 20+4 with my first baby (second pregnancy, suffered a MMC at 12 weeks in April).

I had my 20 week scan today and everything was fine with my little girl! Heart, brain, measurements etc all normal. Sonographer even said it was a 'nice normal scan'! She didn't appear concerned at all.

However, I noticed that during the entire scan she barely moved at all! She moved her head and leg slightly a couple of times but that was it. She didn't move much in my 17 week gender scan either (though she was in a different position today so she clearly DOES move) She did move a lot more at my 12 week scan.

I have an anterior placenta so haven't really felt many movements aside from the odd pop and flutter. I think I MAY have felt a much stronger rippling sensation when I was laying in bed latest night, but again I don't know if it was actually gas or baby.

I'm not trying to worry as the sonographer wasn't at all concerned. Anyone else have a lazy baby on their scans?

Picture of my squidge ❤️ You can see she's got her face wedged right up against the placenta!

My first was very lazy, and still is and he's 11.
I was on at the ward 3 times because of reduced movements with him.
You get to know your babies routines strangely enough and every so often he liked change that.

My second was wiggly and wouldn't stop moving...he's 4 and still constantly on the go.

If everything was fine at the scan I wouldn't worry too much. Keep an eye on what you can and speak to a midwife if you are really concerned. It's better to speak to them for peace of mind that keep yourself up worrying

Lovely scan photo by the way. Can't wait for mine :)

My daughter's scan for my grandson was similar. They even got her up off the bed to do some activity to get him moving. He didn't. They decided he was sleeping. Try not to worry, all her vitals were fine.

I didn't feel much movement with either of my two until after 20 weeks. Probably nearer 24 weeks. I wouldn't worry too much, especially not if the sonographer didn't seem concerned. You were probably scanned when baby was sleeping or resting. My Two were always more active in the evenings.

Ours wasn't moving a huge amount at our 20-week scan, other than moving her arm into awkward positions for getting measurements. Certainly not rolling and kicking/flipping. But we had a private scan the next day to find out the sex and she was moving a lot more, so she was obviously just sleepy for the first one.

Our first scan was first thing in morning, and even now at 24 weeks she doesn't move as much in the mornings (lazy like me!). Our second scan was in late afternoon, which tends to be when she's more active now.

I had hardly any movement at 20 week scan either..Babys sleep too! They can't be awake all of the time, try not to worry, its very common and not a problem

My 20 week scan was ok but at my dating scan at 13+4 my baby was hunched up like a little prawn and would not move for ages - they had me jumping around, getting up and walking around for a bit and coming back, wedged on my side with a pillow and all sorts! In the end my baby moved into a position they could measure for all of about 30 seconds then curled back up into a ball again but thankfully that was long enough for them to measure. I am 34 weeks now and get loads of movements.

I think it’s often just luck of the draw - if you happen to have your scan at a time when the baby is “sleeping” then they won’t move much. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.

I had to go back for a second 20 weeks scan because my baby was asleep in an awkward position and wouldn't wake up despite me jumping in the sonography room Grin

Almost every scan I had with my DS he was sleeping or lying on his tummy haha funnily enough he's 5 months now n does nothing but sleep or lie on his tummy haha

I had a 20 weeks scan today, the couldn't see baby face because of her awkward position, baby was sleeping. Everything else was fine.
Did this happen to anyone else? I am bit worried 😟

Are you sure it’s the face pressed against placenta? It looks to me like the curvature of the spine is against placenta and baby is facing down in the pic? (Can see what I think are vertebra across the top and a hand pointing down but just my opinion!)
