Can't stop crying - baby measuring 8 weeks at 12

Had my 12 week scan today and the midwife couldn't get a good picture. All she could make out that was remotely baby-like was a foot. She could hear the heartbeat but not see it. She said that the baby was only measuring 8 weeks and asked about my dates.

My dates are correct. I'm 100% certain of that for reasons I won't go into now. Anyway, the date she gave means I'd have had a positive test before I was even pregnant.

I tried to tell her this but she wasn't interested. Attitude was very "stupid woman has her dates wrong". I had a scan at A&E at 8 weeks which was fine. She didn't have a record of that so wouldn't take it into consideration.

What do I do now? Just sit about and wait for my 20 week scan, when I'll actually be 24 weeks?! Just need a bit of a handhold, please 😭

All the best for tonight!

skunkatanka · 24/10/2018 17:46

Good luck OP. Let us know how you get on tonight.

myotherbagisgucci · 24/10/2018 18:14

Good luck OP! 🍀🍀

Firstbornunicorn · 24/10/2018 20:46

Back from the scan... Saw baby jumping about in there and waving! It was amazing, tbh. And the little rascal measured exactly 12+0! A whole day spent in tears for nothing.

Ive been watching your thread all day, i am soo delighted for you!! Sleep easy 😊.

L0kiWh0 · 24/10/2018 20:50

Oh thank god. I was worried. My mismatched dates/scan wasn’t good news at all.

Do they have PALS where you are? I’d definitely complain about how you were treated

Celebelly · 24/10/2018 20:50

Amazing!! So happy and glad for you.

That midwife was appalling.

SpannerH · 24/10/2018 20:57

So happy for you! Definitely get a complaint put in about her! If she would have done her job probably you wouldn't have gone through all that worry and heartbreak and (and I know it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things but) the cost of the private scan.

Firstbornunicorn · 24/10/2018 21:04

Thanks everyone! You are all lovely. I might just cry again!!!

fantastic news - stunning picture !!

Firstbornunicorn · 24/10/2018 21:05

The general consensus seems to be that I should complain about the midwife. I'm going to look into it, but I'd say the process of doing so is going to be deliberately complicated and energy-zapping.

So happy for OP. I also just wanted to say well done for making sure you got the medical treatment you and your baby deserved-that’s entirely down to you so well done for fighting your corner! I wish you all the best for the rest of your pregnancy

ThanksItHasPockets · 24/10/2018 21:11

I’m so pleased to hear your good news. The most pressing matter, if you want the combined testing, is to get in for your scan by 13+6.

Bluebelltulip · 24/10/2018 21:12

Fantastic news.

Celebelly · 24/10/2018 21:14

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the combined testing isn't offered in NI (at least not on the NHS). Because of abortion legislation, they don't test for Downs. That might also explain why there are midwives routinely performing ultrasounds instead of dedicated sonographers –the scans are largely just for dating purposes and checking pregnancy is viable. That is just speculation on my part though.

You can get the nuchal test, etc. privately though, I believe.

DryIce · 24/10/2018 21:17

What fantastic news! I'm so pleased to see a happy update to this thread. But so sorry you were treated like that, you must have had an awful days worry

3secondsfromchaos · 24/10/2018 21:18

Awww lovely news. I read on the go earlier and just popped back hoping you’d updated. Put your feet up and enjoy your evening BrewFlowers

ashtrayheart · 24/10/2018 21:21

Wow what a difference in scan pics. Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy

peachgreen · 24/10/2018 21:21

I'm so cross on your behalf OP. So sorry you went through that. Definitely complain. What a gorgeous wee thing.

Worieddd · 24/10/2018 21:22

Congratulations!

Your midwife is not competent enough to do ante-natal ultrasound! I’m genuinely shocked at what you have been through OP. Please complain it really is not acceptable she needs re-training!

lauryloo · 24/10/2018 21:23

So glad the private scan went well.

I can definitely recommend the Ulster hospital, I had both my babies there. Had a friend who had her baby last year in Antrim and had a horrible time with dismissive midwives

M0gg · 24/10/2018 21:24

I'm so delighted for you. I can't imagine how devastated you must have felt earlier. That's so wrong.

Was it a random midwife or someone you'll be expected to carry on seeing throughout your pregnancy?

QueenOfMyWorld · 24/10/2018 21:27

Midwife should be sacked

katienana · 24/10/2018 21:29

Thank goodness! What a brilliant picture xxx

shouldidoitspoilt · 24/10/2018 21:33

What the hell was on the first scan

Her bed side manner sounds awful

So happy to see this good news,

Sweet dreams and congratulations x
