I had a scan last week, baby 8 weeks & 4 days. Strong heart beat & distinct little shape. Family overjoyed. I feel bloated, sick & boobs sore. I had a home test left in the cupboard tonight and out of stupidity I took test - test shows negative ?!? Have had no bleeding, cramps etc. Really confused and Hubby now out buying a few more tests. Please tell me this can happen and I’m still pregnant ? Totally confused ... 😢

It's almost certainly a dodgy test, how long had it been in the cupboard? Try not to worry and after this, step away from the tests!

Should I take one that hubby is buying now ? God I need direction, totally confused 😐

I should have said, even in the event of a missed miscarriage, it can take a while for the hormones to go back to normal, so you would have had a positive. So that makes it much more likely to just be a faulty test.

Thanks so much xx

If your hcg is very high you can get a false negative (hook effect). Even if you had miscarried at 9 weeks your tests would still be positive. Try diluting urine with water and retesting if still concerned.

Lilbear14 · 18/10/2018 20:14

That's really odd.
It could be a dodgy test, false negatives happen. Could be something simple like it has been damaged at some point. Let us know how you get on with the other tests. If they are negative aswell I would reccomend ringing your local epu, and getting them in to check you over.

You will get the most accurate result with FMU so I'd try to wait. Bit I do understand how impossible that may be!

FendiJacket · 18/10/2018 20:15

Whatever you do, save one test for the morning Flowers

Mumtobe193 · 18/10/2018 20:16

I second what @Rinceoir said.

The hook effect is definitely a thing.

Same thing happened to me, got a strong positive once I diluted my pee a bit.

Lilbear14 · 18/10/2018 20:18

Yes the hook effect I couldn't remember what it was called so I've had a quick look on Google before I replied again. But seen that it's already been mentioned.

Celebelly · 18/10/2018 20:30

Yep as others have said, could be hook effect. Dilute your wee: my tests started getting lighter at 6 weeks until I diluted the pee with water.
You wouldn't go to 0 HCG in that little time.

Celebelly · 18/10/2018 20:31

Oh and don't do any more tests after these! That way madness lies.

hayleyfx · 18/10/2018 20:38

It’s called the ‘hook effect’ hun. When I was pregnant with my son after 6 weeks my tests started getting lighter then negative. If I strongly diluted the urine sample then they would show a strong positive. Basically you have so much hcg in your system that the pregnancy test gets confused. Also after I lost my son it took 6 weeks for pregnancy tests to show a negative so they definitely wouldn’t be negative already! Everything is totally fine. Congrats on healthy bub Smile

I just took the bells & whistle test that my husband brought home. Diluted my pee and it came up positive - thank you all so much for being so positive & calm - that’s it, no more tests !!! Xxxx
