I am really suffering with reflux/heartburn, the GP gave me some gaviscon but it's not helping - although I may be taking it at the wrong time in relation to meals...has anyone found the most effective time window?

If you are really suffering on a daily basis then go back to the GP and request omeprazole which should stop you having heartburn at all.

Gaviscon can only really treat the symptoms so I'd take it when you feel the pain but there is just no need for it if you are suffering consistently.

I had terrible heartburn for all my pregnancies and it took until the 3rd one before the GP suggested omeprazole and it changed my life!!

thank you :)

It sounds like you're taking it wrong.

Gaviscon is really only useful when you take it when you feel heartburn. Taking it before you feel heartburn won't do much for you.

I constantly have a bottle of Gaviscon with me everywhere I go! Drives me mad, but don't know what I'd do without it.
Was the same on my first pregnancy too.

thank you; I'm just trying to take it whenever I feel the burn today to see if it helps. I hate those bloody bile burps :(

I've also been really struggling. The GP gave me ranitidine tablets which apparently stop how much acid is actually produced. I've found that I need to take those before the heartburn actually starts. I was originally waiting but then it's too late.
Gaviscon is only useful though once the symptoms start. So the second I feel it coming (even after taking the ranitidine) I take gaviscon. Also make sure I take it before bedtime.
Can't see that gaviscon is going to help long term. You'll just have to keep taking it each day. I'd suggest going back to the GP to ask for something stronger if it doesn't get better by itself.

I second omeprazole.. don't waste your time with Gaviscon.

I take one tablet a day and don't suffer any more - magic
