Does anyone know was RI means on an ultrasound scan?

It says RI = 0.51.

Apparently this is low. I’m 39+2 and was having my final growth scan today.

I believe it’s something to do with blood flowing through the umbilical cord

It's how much blood is flowing through the umbilical cord I think

It’s resistence index - it helps determine the proper functioning of the uterine artery and interface with the placenta. Is considered with other measurements - so don’t panic.

Ok thanks, does anyone know how low 0.51 is at this stage? No one really told me anything after the scan. They seemed in a hurry to get me out.
Also my deepest vertical pool was 3.4cm. Does that seem low?

There are several explanations and it might be better speaking to your GP or midwife to discuss what it means for you personally. It’s not a measure that means much in isolation, I believe.

My understanding of low RI is a link to premature labour- so probably not a huge risk for you.

@CherryPavlova I’m having a c section on Wednesday, so I hope he holds on in there until then!
No one seems majorly concerned so I assume all is fine. They did a quick CTG monitoring after the scan and the Midwife said it was really good.

CTG is a better indicator of the babies health and consequently, of placental health. I don’t think it means you’ll definitely have a premature labour it just has a link in some women. Just try not to sneeze!

It’s nothing to worry about - if it was they’d be bringing your CS forward! “End Diastolic Flow present” means there is plenty of blood getting to the baby.
