Heartburn

Morning all

Anyone any advice on pregnancy heartburn? I've tried everything. OTC medicine. Avoiding all citrus fruits. Only drinking water hours before bed. Propping head of bed up etc. Every night I still get excruciating heartburn. I don't sleep and my whole oesophagus and throat hurts when I wake up.

I'm close to tears most nights and could use some advice! Midwife on Wednesday but would appreciate any tips before then...

Thanks!

Omeprazole on prescription from the GP was the only thing that helped me.

My midwives were useless at helping with it. Nobody suggested I call the GP until I was 36 weeks and had been miserable with it for ages, no idea why!

I had heartburn and drank milk ( hate milk) and it seemed to work

BillieAllan · 14/10/2018 08:20

@lambdroid I've had it for weeks too. I just put it down to one of those things but it's started stopping me sleeping and I'm worried about being permanently exhausted before labour kicks in!

Omperzole fro GP was the only thing that helped me. They asked me to try gaviscon for a few weeks first which didn't help but also made me gag. It's horrible. The omperzole really works.

WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs · 14/10/2018 08:29

Ranitidine works ok for me. Again from the GP. You shouldn't have to suffer with it, it's horrible. Go to the GP and get them to give you something that will help.

Wish I hadn't waited until now (37 weeks tomorrow...) - I feel like my throat is burnt to pieces!

I also take Omeprazole and it's amazing. I've not had one flare up since taking it.

Stephisaur · 14/10/2018 09:12

Refreshers sweets and chocolate milk are my two failsafes. Regular milk probably works, but I don’t like it 😂

I’m not sure what it is about refreshers, but everyone in my pregnancy yoga class agrees!

Callmecordelia · 14/10/2018 09:14

Omeprazole. Get it ASAP - you need it. My midwife told me nothing about it, I only got it after a trip to the GP in tears.

gemsparkle84 · 14/10/2018 09:42

Hi OP is it making you cough? I'm pregnant, feel like my throat is burnt constantly and have had a cough for ages. Gaviscon literally does absolutely nothing. Hmm

Kt2108 · 14/10/2018 09:45

Gaviscon advance from GP is so much better than over the counter. As others have said- ranitidine also from GP
people do say stuff about milk/ice cream and love heart sweets though!

Decemberly · 14/10/2018 09:50

Agree that milk seems to help a little, and I use Remegel for a quick fix if out and about. Using Gaviscon at home with limited success at the minute - I’m 35 weeks and if it gets any worse I’ll have to get ask GP about Omeprazole if it gets any worse. I’ve never had heartburn before pregnancy so had no idea how miserable it is 😕

oldsewandsew · 14/10/2018 09:53

Omeprazole here too. My MW also didn’t suggest anything other than gaviscon to help, but the GP prescribed omeprazole when I phoned almost in tears, as i was waking up ‘choking’ numerous times a night. It literally changed my pregnancy, and second time round I requested it much earlier.

MrsLCW · 14/10/2018 11:29

OP you need lovehearts sweets, I swear to God!! The best tip I've ever been given in all of pregnancy! They're best off if you suck them a bit first then chew at the end! Good luck!

laurenluke2017 · 14/10/2018 11:47

@BillieAllan go to your GP and ask for ranitihidine. Its for heartburn, it reduces the amount of acid in your stomach. Its what they give you to take before a c section. I have been taking it twice daily for the last 2 months and have my c section tomorrow and this is what I have been given. Works a treat and gets me through the night. Good luck x
