Rib pain in second trimester

I’m nearly 22+6 and I have quite a sharp pain sort of behind my right boob. I think it’s my rib but it’s quite a sharp pain when I breath in deeply or cough.

I’ve heard of rib pain as the ribs expand as bump gets bigger. Is that what this is?

Because it’s sort of behind my boob I can’t put my finger on exactly where it is but I can only think it would be my rib due to expanding bump otherwise related to my cough 🤔

Hi.
If I were you, I’d go to the doctors. Or call your midwife.
They say rib pain can be a symptom of pre eclampsia, though I’m not sure whether at only 22 weeks, that’s very likely.
But if you have a cough also, then I would say it was more likely to be related to that and definitely go get checked out.
Not to worry you but I had similar pains a couple of years ago and turned out I had
Pneumonia.
I did find that at about 20 weeks I started to get a little more short of breath from where the uterus pushes everything up and starts squashing the other organs (including lungs) but I’ve not had pain.

I broke my rib through coughing in pregnancy 🙈 I was told there’s not a lot that can be done (other than codeine that they were already using to help stop the cough, which in turn caused headaches!!) was all a bit of a nightmare!

I had really bad rib flare in pregnancy. I have twins so was massive but it was very uncomfortable. I had it checked out as you probably should but it turned at to be my ribs expanding due the the position of twin 2. I just had to take parcetamol im afraid and they did give me some exercises which helped a bit. Weirdly, even now (twin 1 and twin 2 have just started school!) I'm a bigger chest/ back size in bras than I was before I had them despite being the same weight so I think it hasn't full gone back to normal. However it did stop hurting after they were born.

Don’t want to alarm you but Pregnancy also increases the risk of pulmonary embolism. Probably not what you have but Please see a dr ASAP.

🙄 Maybe I should see the doctor...

Chest pain should be checked out by a doctor. It could well just be muscular/rib related but in pregnancy you are more at risk from chest infection and blood clots (PE) so please be on the safe side and get it looked at just in case.

Hiya, I am current 33+4 and I had rib pain and for the past 6/7 weeks I've been in utter agony with it. I have been to the Drs, spoke to midwife and have been to traige 3 times because of it. Each time they told me 'it's just where the baby is kicking' however, I knew that it wasn't just that as the pain is so bad and not easing. I went back to traige on Friday after having a mini break down because of the pain, lack of sleep and being unable to do anything whilst trying to work 30/40 hours per week. A different doctor took a look at me and she has diagnosed me with costochondritis. Unfortunately the treatment for it contains ibuprofen so can't be taken whilst pregnant so I have been prescribed codeine (which to be honest, isn't really helping). I also have a scan booked tomorrow to check my liver and gallbladder incase there's an issue there too!

Please get checked out as they may be able to treat you before it gets to bad if it is anything more than brushing. Make sure you keep pushing as well because sometimes it will just be brushed off as bruising even if it's something more like mine was. That's even what a MW said to me. Good luck xx

Thanks Sunflower2018 I don’t think it’s baby kicking. I thought maybe stretching as my bump is obviously getting bigger and I know that can impact on ribs but it is in a specific spot on right hand side...

I might call 111 later and see if I can see doctor today

My pain was in a certain spot. I couldn't quite pin point it. It feels like it's under my boob on the right hand side about 1 thumb nail width down. If that makes sense. It could be something to do with liver or gallstones. Definitely worth giving traige a call just to be checked over x

Emma9876 · 14/10/2018 12:55

I had this and had to have a blood thining injection and a scan the next day to rule out a Pulmonary Embolism, I rang 111 and they ended up sending an ambulance out for me!

AliceRR · 14/10/2018 16:46

@Sunflower2018 That sounds like exactly it. Is this something you have now?

@Emma9876 I’ve been out for a couple of hours and now thinking of calling 111. I feel a bit dramatic but I’ve had it since Friday and tomorrow I’m supposed to be at work so would probably end up leaving it longer until it gets worse...

111 call is exhausting 🙄

OP posts:
AliceRR · 14/10/2018 17:00

They concluded I should see someone within 6 hours so someone from out of hours at my surgery will call

I did say I had no other pain in arms, abdomen, shoulder etc when asked but actually I’m thinking I do have pain in my neck / shoulder but not sure if it is related

It so so stressful knowing what to worry about and potentially ignoring something serious particularly when pregnant

OP posts:
AliceRR · 14/10/2018 17:06

OK so I was just offered an appointment at the hospital at 11:30 which just seems ridiculous so I said I’d just call the GP surgery in the morning...

@AliceRR yes I have this now unfortunately Sad 33+4 weeks so 6 weeks to go! X

AliceRR · 15/10/2018 09:16

@Sunflower2018 Not ideal. I don’t mind so much dealing with it if I know it’s notbing serious and won’t do harm to the baby but it is not pleasant especially when lying down! I’m at the gp surgery now waiting to see the doctor so will see what he says but I can’t help but expect to be fobbed off! Not too long to go for you I suppose (long enough I know if you are in pain and waiting for baby to arrive!)
