what is causing it ?

BikeBug · 14/06/2007 14:30

are you allowed clove oil? That's what they put in those emergency dental packs for travellers (that you can get in outdoorsy shops). Sympathy - had an abscess about 5 years ago, worse pain than childbirth....

MamaG · 14/06/2007 14:30

yes, whats causing it = go to the dentist and they will treat you for free

Can you have oil of cloves when pg? suposed to be good

ComeOVeneer · 14/06/2007 14:30

Try oil of cloves. Is the dentist not doing anything to sort the problem?

MamaG · 14/06/2007 14:31

yy bikebug I'd rther give birth again than have an absess again

mad4girls · 14/06/2007 14:37

i feel the same way mamaG
havent tried clove oil this time but have in the past and just made it hurt more

the dentist cant do anything when ur pregnant not that i would let him anyway

i knew this would happen as i got pregnant everytime

ComeOVeneer · 14/06/2007 14:43

The dentist can do treatment whne you are pregnant. You can't stay in pain for the next 30 odd weeks!

mad4girls · 14/06/2007 14:47

maybe its changed then but i had a friend who was in pain and needed a filling and they wouldnt anything do any because she was pregnant

trouble is i dont go to dentist i have to be put to sleep to have ANY work done

so im stuck with it i guess

The dentist shouldn't refuse to treat you if you have agonising toothache, stuff the rules about removing amalgam fillings - if you develop an abcess that surely outweighs the risks! If s/he refuses, then I'd go to another dentist and insist you must be treated, as if it goes on, you may end up at a dental hospital out of hours anyway (I did last year!). And an abcess requires antibiotics to shift it, so you do need this checking out.

toadstool · 14/06/2007 14:55

I'm the biggest coward re. dentists and have a needle phobia, btw, but with my abcess last year, I was HAPPY to be treated with pretty much everything, because it was preferable to the wretched pain. And WOW - when they removed the root, and the pain started to ebb - I can't describe the relief.

CountessDracula · 14/06/2007 14:57

I had a root canal when I was pg!
Honestly, go to the dentist or you will be so miserable

cupcake78 · 14/06/2007 15:00

The dentist will treat you while you are pregnant. They may chose slightly different ways of treating you ie the drugs they use etc but toothache is horrible and you need to get it sorted out.

mad4girls · 14/06/2007 15:00

well have appt at docs at chemist said they should be able to giveme codiene on prescription

will see how i go with that maybe if im still like his tomrrow ill have to go trouble is im not registered with dentist and the emergency place i normally go has closed temp while having building works

OP posts:
MamaG · 14/06/2007 15:00

mad PLEASE go to the dentist, yoiu must

cupcake78 · 14/06/2007 15:02

The other ladies are right. Not to scare you but leaving it could cause infection and decay in other teeth.

Your only given one set so look after them!!!

toadstool · 14/06/2007 15:04

OK, if you're not registered then NHS direct should give you a list of local dentists who will give you emergency treatment (0845 4647 if me scrambled brain serves me right), or another dental hospital should see you BUT you must check that they're allowed to treat you first (ring in advance). Codeine won't shift an infection .

PartyClown · 14/06/2007 15:05

You HAVE to go to the dentist, it will only get worse. I understand how you feel because normally I have to be dragged kicking and screaming, but at Xmas I had such bad toothache I rang them and was told that if it had woken me and kept me awake it would need treatment.

CountessDracula · 14/06/2007 15:05

codeine will give you appalling constipation

ComeOVeneer · 14/06/2007 16:30

Decay can't spread from onr tooth to another. Also a tooth can't get better without physical treatment, so any drug induced releif is going to be temporary. I'm afraid the only solution is to be brave and get a dentist to sort it out. Generally it will be the bare minimum to get you out of pain if you are pregnant, eg placing a temporary filling, but virtually all forms of dental treament can be undertaken whilst pregnant. The risks to the baby are so tiny.

mad4girls · 14/06/2007 17:21

ok managed to get some codiene from docs in thr hope of some temp relief

I had a tooth out at 12 weeks pg. Unpleasant but not as bad as the toothache!!!

Alfie72 · 14/06/2007 21:28

Try calling NHS direct to find out where your local emergency dental hospital is, they are generally attached to a hospital. I have been to my local one twice and they are better than the usual dentist and it will be free.
They should be able to give you something to nub the pain there I am sure.

mad4girls · 14/06/2007 21:51

well they said i can be seen there even though im not registred but have to ring back in morning first thing to get an appt for tomrrow

think it might be infected as althouangh look swollen the roof of my mouth feels swollen and really aches i guess even anti biotics will help with the pain i feel like im dying and im normally not i winger i promise

cant stop being sick eother which does not help

thanx for listening ladies just trying to keep my mind occupied helps

When I had an absess, I was told it was the only true dental emergancy. It sounds like an absess to me, and I you'll need anti biotics. Personally I would go to A&E, to see if they'll give you some. I had the night form hell with an absess.

toadstool · 14/06/2007 22:48

Sounds like an abcess - I had a swollen roof of mouth and then it became a swollen face. Absolute bloody agony, A and E may be a good option, as you need to start antibiotics ASAP - not good that you're throwing up - remember if your temperature goes up that's not great for the bump.
